I would like to know if anybody with a gasser van has a V10 and why not a V8 and vice versa and how they arived at their decision. Also what type of mileage they are getting and all the other usual questions.
I've got a 2000 E350 with the V10 and 4.10LS gears. I didn't bother with the V8 because I wanted as much power as possible, without going to the diesel (too noisy and heavy). I drive about 4000 miles per month, city and highway. I average 16 mpg (Canadian gallons), that includes playing with 5.0Ls and Z28s! I've read that the V10 gets about 1 mpg less than the V8.

I have a V10 van (RV Cutaway). If I had tried to ask the V8 to do what the V10 does, I think I would actually get worse mileage with the smaller engine, as the V8 would have to rev higher for longer, and work harder than the V10 to move the same load.

I have a 97 V10 Club Wagon Chateau w/3.73LS. I wanted the most power available without going diesel. Our van prior was an E150 with a 351. Slow and too soft suspension for serious work.
MPGs are 10.5 to 16.8. City driving kills the mileage, as does high speed on the highway. The engine has been great, smooth, good power, guiet, and maintenance free.
In defence of the 5.4 which is the same engine less 2 slugs, the early ones were a little down on power, but the newer ones are better. If you didn't haul a bunch of stuff all the time, it might be accetable.
FR 680 what is your mileage when converted to U.S. Gallons?
Fritzmaster: How fast do you consider high speed driving? above 75?
I have been itchin' for a diesel for my next truck , but now I seriously doubt it. So the question is whether or not to get the V10. I am already used to 11-12mpg now and I know the V8 is a giant step up from my existing motor, but of course I would love even more power, but not at the expense of worse mileage than I am experiencing now.
I've never been empty. My van has always 500 to 1000 pounds of stuff and people or more. What really drops the mileage is stop and go. I don't often have a full load either however, never more than 1500 or so, so I can't advise on that.
I consider 85 plus to be high speed. In Arizona, on the way to the Grand Canyon, we did some extended high speed miles (between 80 and 90 MPH) and only got 13.5 MPG. The optimal speed (for mileage considerations) for our van is about 70 to 75.
cocot, sorry I didn't respond earlier.
My average of 16 mpg (Can.) is equal to about 13.4 mpg (US). I carry between 0 and 4500lbs, averaging about 1200lbs, doing deliveries (about 110 stops per 130 miles).

We have a 2001 E350 with a v10 and the best I've gotten is 14 mpg. Have not been on an extended trip. The worst was 10 mpg. Some around town and some pulling a 3500 lb. trailer. Our old van was a E150 with a 5.0 v8. It had a 3.31 rear end and could barely make it up a hill. The v10 has great power. We have the 3.73 rear. One concern I have is a clicking/rattling sound from somewhere near the drivers side of the engine compartment. Had it to the dealer twice and they said it was exhaust related and put clamps on the heat sheilds. This did not stop the noise. It has done it since day one and the van now has 7000 miles on it. They said it won't hurt the engine but I don't know about that. Maybe if it gets worse they will figure out what the problem is. The 1-ton van rides and handles much better than the 1/2-ton.
Eman How is the tranny? In stop and go traffic does it hunt for a gear? or does the torque of the motor hold the proper gear
I had heard about problems with earlier year trans.
I have a 1994 E-250 cargo van w/ the 5.8 v8 engine w/ 184,000 miles on it.
Everthing is original and it still runs strong.
I average about 14mpg on the highway w/ an average of 8000lbs total vehicle weight.
No match for the PSD however.
The transmission seems great. The van only down shifts when pulling the trailer on steep inclines. I read about a transmission problem and I think it was on this site. They said if the transmission had an orange paint mark that it was made after the problems. Looked under the van it has an orange paint swipe on it. The noise sounds like a mini diesel engine. The sound of a playing card in the spokes of a bike. It's not too loud, but noticable. With the windows open I can't here the noise. Only when the windows are up and the interior is quite. At highway speeds around 65 or 70 the road noise must be enough to drowned it out. Mostly here it around town. Weird. I'll let everyone know what it turns out to be if and when I find out what it is. Sometime between now and before the warrenty is out.
