I used a RANGER heater valve for the same thing. To use it for any position you would need a vacuum switch(?). Basically you would select the VENT, turn on the switch and the valve would close allowing the air to be cool. These work off of a vacuum and if you took your dash apart you will see the A/C selector is not that hard to wire in a splitter.

I've been lokking at that too. Just wish it would work in vent position...

Robb, what are you waiting for? Mines been in, shutting of heat in vent and all..... Use the red line behind the glovebox. It sends vacuum to the valve in any position except heat (floor vent), defrost, and heat/defrost mix.

I bought two from Bob at the Deiselstop, one for Dad and one for Fat Diesel (my brother). I was using them as guinea pigs . Once all was good with them, I wanted to do mine and I saw a thread on here about using a Ranger heater control valve. Ranger, you know, the small older Ford pickups.. Anyway, any early 90's Ranger valve is a TRUE BYPASS, not a shutoff (like the one Bob has). Bob's has (I hate referring to it that way) two fittings, it "blocks off" the coolant to the core. The "Ranger valve" actually reroutes the water back to the block (four fittings, uses both hoses versus one hose). Either one works, but at half the cost and with a true bypass, why not go that route (Sorry Bob ). Yes, I used the red vacuum source (versus white, white kills the heat in max A/C only). I am happy to help, let me know if there are any more ?'s! BTW, it is a BIATCH to get that valve back there in a V-10, diesels are a piece of cake.

So Rob (bajarunner), when I go to the parts store, what part (exactly) do I order and from what year Ranger?
Thanks,
Chris

You guys are killing me
I am pretty sure for like 10 years all Rangers used the same valve. Start with 1990 Ranger, 4 banger or whatever they had. Ask for a heater control valve. If the parts guy comes back with a 4 inch square box, so far so good. If he looks like a deer in the headlights, try another buzzword. Heater bypass valve. Heater shutoff valve. Whatever it takes to get him to go to the back of the store, they ALWAYS have these. Open the box. The valve should have 4 inlet/outlets and a vacuum diaphram. If still all good, proceed to the next step. How much . If about $12, give or take depending on your area, you are good to go. Remember, the worst that can happen if you GOOF UP TOTALLY is your heater doesn't blow hot, or you haven't killed the heat, the whole point of this exercise. It is pretty straightforward. Hope I didn't push too many buttons out there , I am more than happy to respond. If you want to PM me also thats
BTW - I would have posted the part number if I kept the receipt. I have more crap around my house, keeping receipts is practically useless, I couldn't find it if I had to.
