Axle ratio

Does anyone know the logic behind Ford only offering the 4x4 V-10 with the 4.10 axle? I have a 6.0 that I am about to trade. I had a V-10 several yrs ago that I was pleased with and it had a 3. something ratio. Could it be the 18" tires?

Re: Axle ratio

You can also get it with a 4.30, not just the 4.10. (ordered mine with the 4.30LS and 4X4)

I suspect you're correct in that the taller tires are behind the option.

Re: Axle ratio

You're assuming correctly, Ford dropped the 3.73 rear end when they changed the wheel size from 16", and the Torque-shift trans was introduced. As I told the Chebbie driver after I unstuck his truck with my 40 HP tractor "It's all in the gearing...".

Re: Axle ratio

Just so I understand. The 4.10 with the larger diameter wheels puts the same ratio to the ground as the old 3.73??

To say yes to this would require knowing the exact outside diameter of the tires and gear ratios of each gearset in the transmission for both the old and new drivetrains. The short answer, as wickedsprint said, is "in theory". Here's a LINK to a website with some handy calculators to make the calculations a bit easier for you.
