Can adding Pure Acetone increase gas mileage???

I read on the AOL news last week that this guy added 2 oz of pure acetone to 10 gallons of gas and it increased his gas mileage buy about 30% to 50%. Has anyone tried this? I'm afraid to try it with my new truck!!--but it sounds great--something to do with increased volatility.
Supposedly the gas companies won't tell you this because it will hurt their overal profits.

Re: Can adding Pure Acetone increase gas mileage???

I don't know anything about ketone chemistry compared to gasoline... but the last time I spilled acetone the rubber grommets that I had on the workbench turned into soft, sticky black goo. ..... Not sure I'd wanna risk putting it into my fuel system......and have the seals in my fuel injectors dissolve. Betcha if Ford figured out what you did, you'd have some warranty problems if something went wrong with your truck.

Acetone is more volatile than gasoline, but I can't see how a couple ounces could provide such a big increase in available energy from the gas.

Re: Can adding Pure Acetone increase gas mileage???

I think mythbusters tried this one..nothing....They tried everything to get those gas mileage adders to work. Most made it worse, some didnt do anything, a few did nothing but damage.

Didn't a wise man once say..."If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is".

And something else about "There's one born every minute".

Wiser words have not been spoken.

Here is one pro-website

And here are two con-websites

You'll have to make up your own mind.

No questions asked MPG improver

I have a proven way to get more MPG

Go pee into the fuel filler of your truck.
Now drive the truck with great care so as to not disturb the pee and have it picked up by fuel pump.

The MPG will go way up.

You will have to plan trips so as to avoid hills.

You will have to go slowly onto freeways, especially if the entrance ramp is a cloverleaf style.

Traffic lights and stops signs will have to be anticiapted and you must ease off throttle very early and coast slowly up to these stops.

If you fail to do these things the fuel cost reduction will still work.
The little econo-box car you will drive while your truck is in shop having fuel system dismantled and cleaned of urine will get better MPG than your big truck.
You can't lose with my method.

Re: No questions asked MPG improver

Well, Mythbusters is pretty good entertainment but hardly fact. Not a flame. Just an observation as I was saying to my wife a few nights ago people are starting to quote it as "fact". Hardly.

As for the subject. Look up the Serious Explorations forum as they have a HUGE thread on this.

Truth is though, would you really want to risk emissions, etc damage even if it DID work?
