Let me check the numbers I am hearing...

6 quarts in when you built and installed the engine.
3 quarts when it died at the green light
5 quarts after you got it back from the mechanics.

Nowhere have I heard you say that you started out with 15 quarts in the engine to begin with.

If the numbers above are the only oil you have added then you are just now at the bottom end of the OK range. (6 + 3 + 5 = 14 quarts)

I'm sure I'm misunderstanding what you are saying, but that is what I get from reading your posts.

99.5 and up 7.3s hold 15 quarts. Is that 15 quarts plus the total of 3 that are up in the oil galleries and the HPOP?

You may be a little lost since you are posting in the gas engine forum and not a diesel forum. It also doesn't look like you started to read from the first post since the first sentence says "i have a 99.5 v8 5.4" The gas engines do not hold 15 quarts.

Red face

Man, I have to learn to lay off the crack!!!

I knew I was missing something! I just figured that it was that he filled it with oil to start with, not that I had the completely wrong engine type in my head.

My apologies!
