I'm curious how does the exhaust tone on one of these newer V10's (or even the previous design for that matter) with a cat back system on it sound? I know the V8's have always had a nice sound "crisp and clean" do the V10's sound simular? I'm not really talking about real loud exhaust but the one's that you open it up a little and let it flow with just a nice pleasant rumble. The only V10's I've heard around here belong to farmers that are all stock and there isn't much sound to them stock. Just something I've been wondering.

Well, I don't have a cat-back (kept the stock 3" pipe) but do have an aftermarket muffler. It sounds pretty good at idle. Much closer to that V8 sound than stock. It does get sort of loud under wot. It I did it again I might go with the 70 series, which is what Flowmaster recommends for our trucks. I went with the 50 series because I was afraid the 70 would be too quiet. Overall I am happy with the sound though.

No rumble. More like indy car roar. Ricer on steroids.. etc.
[/ QUOTE ]I agree. I heard a Dodge Viper running straight pipes at the drag race last weekend. It sounded like a Honda with a fart pipe on it.
I will keep my exhaust quite because to me it sounds horrible.
Quite interresting. I never thought I'd get replies that say it sounds the way you all are describing it. I guess inside I thought it would sound sort or like a V8 I don't know why that's just what I was thinking in my mind. I'd like to listen to one of them one of these days.
Thank you for the replies folks.

I heard an F250 V10 with dual exhaust the other day and it sounded like an old UPS truck. I'll leave mine stock until I hear of a good sounding system. These are 10 cylinder engines so they just aren't going to sound like a V8. Has anyone heard the Banks Monster exhaust yet?

There is a truck here in town that has a full Banks system on it. I havn't heard it under any really power, just driving by babying it. But at just idling and coasting by it has a really deep rumble, kinda like a big block with a 50-60 series muffler on it. I was actually pretty impressed with it.

my dad had an '02 F-250 V10 with a 50 Series flowmaster and 4" exhuast. I think that truck sounded good. He had a '99 F-250 5.4L V8 before with the same setup (but with 3.5" exhaust) and I would say they were pretty comparable in tone, but the V10 a little louder. I would go for it, i like the way it sounds, its unique.
I just put a Spintech on mine and I am impressed with the sound. I have heard a few V-10's with exhaust and they sound like crap but this one sounds good

The Dodge V-10s fire two cylinders at the same time. So you'll only get 5 pulses from the exhaust. Ford fires 1 at a time. The Dodges sound like tractors. I haven't heard a real good V-10 Ford yet either. I'm going to try the Gibson cat back on mine.

I have to agree. Not many after market systems make a V-10 sound deep. When I got my 2001 with a V-10 I wanted that deep throaty sound and couldnt find anything even close. A friend of mine is into mustangs and he takes the mufflers off and dumps the exaust. Well lets just say I tried it and it sounded really good at idle and at low speeds, but give it gas and you got a chainsaw on crack. It was worse then the old beaters driving down the road. A friend of mine put the flowmasters on his V-10 and its actually pretty nice. not too loud but is definatly deeper and throater then stock.
Has anyone tried a magnaflow muffler on there V10? My local performance shop recommends a magnaflow over a flowmaster. They're telling me it sounds better on the F250 V10's.
