Favorite Oil For Gassers

Just trying to see what everybody likes as far as oil goes for Ford gas engines. Maybe you might have some oil sample tests to help out too. Thanks

Re: Favorite Oil For Gassers

See the F-150 in my sig. It has never had anything but Castrol GTX init. Nearly 214,000 hard miles and still uses no oil between my 3000 mile changes.
All the major brands make great oils anymore, but I will stick to Castrol in the gasser.

I used Royal Purple 5w20 in my 2004 F150 4.6. I plan on using it on my 05 350 with the V10. I ran some oil samples and all tests came back with wear numbers way below average.

Re: Favorite Oil For Gassers

Mark another one for Mobil 1. Only 28K on this truck, but my last one is still going strong at over 200K with Mobil 1 exclusively. Never even had the valve cover off.

My Blackstone reports for this truck look great, Blackstone even recommended upping my drain interval. This is the first one I've pushed to their recommended level. We'll see what this report looks like in another month or so.

Re: Favorite Oil For Gassers

By the by, I tried the 0-20 Mobil 1 and my 5.4L drank it... I think I ended up adding 3 qt's over the 4,000 mile inerval. Most of those miles were hiway too. So I'm back to the 5-30 now and right at 1/2 qt low at time of oil change.

Re: Favorite Oil For Gassers

I use Exxon 5-30. It's only $1.29/qt. at Autozone and my previous truck went 225K miles on it and was still running great when I sold it. I also had a Bronco with 200K on it when sold. Those trucks ran 10-40 but was all Exxon all their lives. I change oil every 5K miles.

Re: Favorite Oil For Gassers

I did not vote because MotorCraft semiSynth 5X20 the recommended oil is not listed. I use the MotorCraft FL820S filter and the MotorCraft oil and have found no compelling reason to change.

Not to hijack this post but where do you get that oil and what is the cost..? I'm looking at things that will cut back on my day to day costs. Not just on the truck but everything in my life and this a good place to start.

Thanks, Thomas

Re: Favorite Oil For Gassers

Wall Mart has discontinued their relationship with Ford so finding the stuff there is hard but if you do it usually is very inexpensive.

So now I find 5W20 $1.29-$1.79 and FL820s $2.99-$3.79 at O'Rielys and AutoZone local parts stores

My dealer only charges me $19.95 + tax for a oil change.

Re: Favorite Oil For Gassers

I went to motorcraft 5/20 also when wal-mart sold it. I noticed when I checked my milage ( 90% hwy , @ average 70 -75 mph ) I got 16mpg ! I thought I was getting 14 at best . Is it the oil ? I have about 66000 miles on a 2002 E350 15 passenger van . Wal mart said it uses only motorcraft in oil changes on the fords that require it due to liability and warrenty issues . When they were still handling the oil. Thats why I decided to try it. I now get at auto zone also . I use fram ph-2 ?
Before change I always used 20/50 castrol in most everything including my xr600 dirtbike. (4 stroke thumper). And still do , except for ford. BTW , my odometer seems 4-5 mph faster than sign postings at 70 mph according to big led police "your speed" So I compensate on road by driving with cruise control on about 78ish mph on my speedo.

Re: Favorite Oil For Gassers

Thanks for the info and input. I have a 93 F-150 with the 5.0L. I changed it to Amsoil but in the cummer that synthetic would push out the rear main seal. The color of tha Amsoil today (just changed the oil today) was the blackest oil I have seen in a while. I know thats not bad, but... I just dont feel right runnin extended drain intervals on a truck i havnt owned since new.

I ended up changing the oil over to Castrol GTX 10W30 for the summer, with a Napa (WIX) filter for what its worth. Thanks again.
