A few gallons of help needed...

Ok, I know I'm new. I am having a problem only getting 25 gallons of fuel in my tank. I know there is a post in here about a fuel vent mod somewhere but I couldn't find it... I have a gasser... stop it... I know your going to make a joke. Back to my original problem, if I have a 29 gallon tank why will it not fill all the way up. I have never been able to put more than 25-25.5 gal in it.... Somebody

Re: A few gallons of help needed...

Do a search for "poontank" or "harpoon tank mod" in the Engines & Drivetrain forum. A user Maroon Harpoon dreamt this one up and it works.

P.S. Welcome to the site.

On Edit:
I just looked again and noticed you have a 5.4L V8. You don't want to do this mod. There should be a gasoline vapor collection canister (I think that's what they're called) and filling your tank to the rim of the fuel port is not a good idea. After the second "click" on the gas pump, stop trying to put fuel in.

Re: A few gallons of help needed...

Welcome, ohski. I don't think anyone is going to make any jokes about you or your pickup. Most of us get along pretty well.

I have an observation to make. When you say you can only get 25 gallons into a 29 gallon tank, are you sure that it is empty? IOW, are you going by the gauge reading, or is the pickup really out of fuel? In my Excursion, if I'm sitting on "E", I usually have around 5 gallons left in the tank. You might indeed have close to 29 gallons on board. Just a thought.

Re: A few gallons of help needed...

Well the last time I filled up (before I left to work overseas) I drove the truck 50 miles after it passed the down side of "E". You maybe right, I hate to run it till its completely empty just to find out. Thanks

Re: A few gallons of help needed...

I am just back after a long break from the this forum, so I have to do the above mentioned search also for what ever "fix" someone has.

My"fix" is a left rear wheel "step" made from two 2X6s 10"and 8" long that I put under the tire and drive up on. Seems the 29 gal plastic tank traps air in the front section and if the rear of the truck is about 2" to 4" taller than the front, I can get 4 to 5 more gallons in with out having to "burp" (jump up and down on running board) the danged thing.

I did deliberatly run mine NEAR dry. (Do not intentionally do this as the in-tank fuel pump is cooled by the fuel, and running one dry is almost always an expensive event).

And I found that I can stuff 31.7 gallons of Techroline fortified gasoline into the 29 gallon tank. Caution.... do NOT do this unless you intend to drive the tank volume back down to a quantity that is able to fit in this space .....

I went from the gas station to my favorite watering hole, all of 3 blocks away, and had me a cold beer or three before a gent came in, and notified the bar that the fire department was hosing down sombodys truck outside. We all went outside to see the show and it was my truck!!

Seems that in the TEXAS heat, the last thing you want to do is over fill the tank and let it sit... cause it WILL expand and flow all over the parking lot and cost some money if the fire department has to treat your truck as a hazmat site this was a hard lesson
