Guys, ford is yanking me again. After being told that my dealer had a NEW motor AND rear
end on order for me they called and said ford is trying to discourage them from the install. Ford wants them to do "further testing". They said there is no flutter fix!
If my truck isn't fixed, or new parts aren't
ordered by next week, I totally give up on Ford. My wife gets the new suburban instead of the Excursion I wanted to match my SD.
I'll dump the SD and get the new Chevy HD.
Its a bunch of bull**** that we've had to go through the crap that we have for this length of time just for our new $ 30,000+ vehicles to be driveable. I'm tired of dealing with the supposed flutter issue. FU*%! Ford

I wouldn't spend too much time arguing with the dealer if I were you. Check my other post, I just finished installing the 2001 pipe myself, and almost completely eliminated the flutter for $90 and an hours worth of work. If you don't want to do the work yourself, a local muffler shop would probably only charge about $50, since it would be a half hour job for them.

NoMo, Yep, five of 'em. Supposedly some of the other V10 guys are getting help but I'm
not. My truck sounds like **** and no help is available. I think a lot of what is discussed on this forum is "theoretical".
All I've been able to do here is cry about my problem. In 9 months I have found no solid answers and no help. The guys here are good dudes and try to help but anyone who'd pay what we paid for these trucks and live with the supposed flutter is an idiot! No offense friends but I'm frustrated to the point of no return!

pcasciola, Did the new 01 part fit your V10?
The pictures don't look like it. Did you order the part number posted by webigon?
Did you have bad flutter? Did the new pipe really work? Do you have CA emisissions? C'mon, C'mon, hurry, I'VE GOT TO KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a feeling you posted that before reading my message. I was just about to post a "TRY THE DAMN PIPE" message after reading it, but I stopped to check and see if you posted again. Sure enough.....
Yes, the '01 Pipe fit my '00 V10. I don't think it will fit a '99, because robd posted some pics, and it looks like the cat flange is too far back. I'm not sure if all '99s are that way. My cat flange is not far from the union of the two pipes, and just in front of the trans crossmember. I posted the part numbers in the "webigon flutter page" thread, and I don't have CA emissions. I was help the Ford parts counter guy locate the correct part, though, and neither of us saw a different part number listed for CA emissions trucks.
My flutter was pretty damn bad, but not as bad as what I heard on the summitx MP3 files. A few friends who rode in the truck said "What the hell is that noise"? Mine sounded like almost constant engine ping, especially around 2000 rpm when under load.
Also, like I said in the other post, it's not completely gone, but it's 99% gone, which is good enough for me.
Try it out, and please let us all know how well it works for you.
Good luck, and don't you dare buy one of those ugly new Chevy's.

pcasciola, I just read your other post.WOWW!
It worked! The flutter is ALMOST GONE? Is that enough? Do you feel any loss of power from those tight neckdowns? Thanks for you help!

pcasciola, Dang, time warp! Anyway, if your flutter was only around 2000 rpm, mine is LOUD from 2100 to 3000 and seems to be getting worse. Now after shifting from 3rd to 4th when the rpms are backing down I'm hearing the noise. I didn't used to. Now
I also hear a short knocking sound at the high rpms when starting cold.
Is mine flutter? I want it gone completely.
My service manager said they will not try the 01 pipe on an 00 engine. They said it won't work! But on the same note, I looked at a few new 01 V10s and their pipes were identical to mine!

If the noise you are hearing is getting louder, it must be different than the noise I had. I had the airy kinda sound that others have defined as the "flutter". It almost sounds like an exhaust leak, or engine ping even, both of which are usually louder when under load at lower rpms. In fact, for the first two weeks, I was convinced it was one of those two problems. After trying 94 octane fuel with a 4+ octane booster, I ruled out engine ping. I had one of my brave friends stick his head under my truck while I held the brake down, put it in drive, and hit the gas to put it under load, and we confirmed the sound was definitely coming from the exhaust. That's about when I discovered this site, and that I wasn't the only one having this problem.
As far as the '01 y-pipe, I do notice a little difference in performance with the "chocked off" pipe. It feels about the same with regular driving, but the high rpm horsepower is definitely down a little, which I expected after comparing the two pipes.
I hope you figure your problem out, and for under $100, and and hour or so of labor, I would definitely recommend trying the '01 pipe.

Thanks for your input! I don't know what I have! I'm taking the truck back in next week
for "further testing". If I have to I'll put the headers on or dump the truck. I'll also
dump a 24 year relationship with ford.
Thanks for posting your pics of the new pipe.
Whats odd is that ALL of the 01's I lokked under at my dealer and another dealer had
the pipe that is identical to mine. I din't
drive any though.

I don't seem to have flutter at all. However, this morning after I left home: I had just entered the freeway and I started hearing a resonating sound that sounded like it was coming from the passengers side floorboard. It was annoying! It kinda reminded me of the old glass-pack mufflers except more annoying. (We thought that sound was cool when we were young.) Anyway, I looked at my rpm's and noticed that I was turning between 2000 and 2100 rpm. I thought this was strange since my cruising rpm has been 1800 to 1900 rpm's. I pressed the OD off button and then back on again and the rpm's dropped to about 1850 where the engine usually runs at 65 mph and the "noise" went away.
So here's my thought. Is it possible that those of you that have "bad" flutter are running 4:30 gears, those with "moderate" flutter, 4:10 gears, and those of us with little or no flutter, 3:73 gears. The gearing would change your cruising rpm and possibly put you right in the "flutter zone".
I'm running 3:73 gears and cruise at 1850 rpm's at 65 mph. The only time my rpm's hit the low 2000's is when I'm accelerating and then I'm just crossing that rpm; I don't stick around long enough to hear anything.
I didn't see your signature so I don't know what gears you're running. Do you think the logic here has any merit at all?
Maybe you could ask people to post their flutter severity (bad, moderate, low/none) and their gear ratios and cruising rpm's and see if there is any correlation.
If this is true though, that 4:30 gears create the conditions for the worst flutter, don't tell Ford or their answer will be to eliminate the 4:30 rear-end with the V10 rather than fix the problem.

I totally agree that the gears would have a pretty substantial effect on the flutter. Good thinking, I can't believe no one said it before. The only problem is, I also have 3.73s, and have pretty loud flutter until I switched to the '01 pipe. The real question is, do you have the '00 pipe or the '01 pipe? Aside from the y-pipe, our trucks are almost identical, but I think most '01 trucks made in the past few months still have the old pipe, according to some other '01 drivers who have seen my Y-Pipe pics.
But, you are onto something. I guess the list of things we need to gather now is, type of pipe ('99-'00 style, or '01 style), gear ratio, California emissions, and, if you have the flutter problem, the rpm where the flutter is the worst.

Is it true? Is the end of flutter near?
"Weighs a ton and built to run."
I'm starting to keep track already. spoon said he has the flutter, with 3.73s and the old style y-pipe.
Here's mine before the installation of the new pipe:
-Severity of flutter-
Bad, but not as bad as summitx mp3 files
-CA Emissions-
No
-Rear end gear ratio-
3.73LS
-Tire size-

-Y-Pipe type- (IMPORTANT)

Please see my y-pipe pics (in my sig) so we know which pipe you have, not what year your truck is.

-Severity of flutter-
not bad...doesn't really bother me but so far I've taken it relatively easy on the throttle with only 250 miles on her thus far. I don't think summitx mp3 files sound like flutter. That sounds like a different problem altogether.
