I just bought a 2001 V10 250 4x4 CC. Got it for Christmas. I love this truck, and I didn't realize how much I would until I actually drove it. But, after only 150 miles or so, it started making a sort of faint clunking sound in the front end over bumps at relatively slower speeds (1-40 mph). It's getting worse.
I've read some posts here about what I thought might be similar noises, but those seem to be related to turning the wheel only. Mine is definitely not only related to wheel turns as I can hear the noise when going straight too. However, I can best reproduce this problem when making a soft left turn into my driveway (which has a 3 inch high, 45 degree concrete ramp up from the street), allowing the left front tire to hit the ramp first. If I creep very, very, very slowly (under 1 mph, I'd estimate), it doesn't make the noise. If I go a mile an hour or two, then I hear the noise AND feel it vibrate through the steering column. In fact, I don't always feel the vibration through the column when I hear the noise, only if I hit a sharp bump at slower speeds. The noise, however, is there most of the time at the speeds mentioned above.
I'm obviously going to take this into the dealer for fixing, but I want to be prepared. Does anyone have any guesses as to what could be causing this problem? If I can give them some specifics, I might have a better shot of their finding it on the first (or second!) time.
By the way, I'm not going to let this little issue sway me from how I feel about the truck. So far, the positives greatly outweight the negatives. I'm very pleased with the purchase, and this forum is nothing short of fantastic.
Lots of things it could be- shocks, springs, sway-bar, transmission or motor mounts, drive shaft. I'm sure there are other items to check as well. Is it a single "clunk" or a series of them?
Yes, it's clearly just a single clunk over each given bump. Last night I also noticed it happens if I make a soft right turn in the same scenario above, so it seems the problem is on both side of the front end, not just the left.
I've got about 2,500 miles on mine and it started doing the same thing pretty soon after I got it. At first it sounded like what I thought might be a shock or a bad bushing or something like that, but now I believe the problem lies in the leaf springs. Mine only does it on the left side. It started as as single thunk noise and has now progressed to what is squeaky springs. I thought about taking it in, but I don't know if Ford will do anything for squeaky springs. I first noticed it every time I would hit a speed bump or some other bump in the road. What you're describing sounds like the same thing I've encountered. Let me know when you find out what it is exactly.

I had the same trouble. It was the Right front hub bearings. They were shot! They got hot also, and bent my front axle in the hub. I thought it was my locking hub.
It's hard to tell if we are all talking about the same thing, but I had a pop that felt like it was coming right from under my feet, maybe a little in front, but only on the left side. It usually happened when I was turning into a driveway over a small bump. I thought it was the frame bolts on my Waag bars just twisting and settling in, since it didn't happen when the vehicle was stock.
I put all that in the past tense, because after a month of doing it, it has now stopped! I was told it was the sway-bar linkage (after I put on my lift and bars). A bearing problem sounds urgent, but perhaps these other pops just take a little while to settle in.
Pio, if it hasn't happened yet, your driver's side door will soon start with some wind noise and then a small rattle. The problem, found by many 2001 owners, is the weatherstripping on the rear door that separates the front and rear door windows. I just put another piece of stripping over the old and it stopped the noise.
