I have a 98 F150 4WD w/ 4.6 liter V8. What I can't figure out is the gas milage, I thought it would be a bit better.
I get 13.5 in town
I get 13.5 in 4WD up a hill
I get 13.5 with a trailer
I get 13.5 down hill with a tailwind and the engine off.
I get 13.5 when I'm sitting around with the air on waiting for my wife.
What gives? I'm wondering if the 5.4 wouldn't do just a bit better??
My guess (free and worth the price) is that the 5.4 would do worse under nearly all circumstances, the exception being one where the 4.6 is flat out but the 5.4 would not be due to extra hp available but not being used.
Some friends with expeditions report 13-15 with the 5.4

I "almost" hate to tell you this, but I just finished off my first tank of gas in my new F250 V10 and calculated 14.95 mpg. I sold a '95 F-150 with 5.8L (351cu in) that barely got that. Obviously I'm very pleased.

I had a '97 F150 4X2 SC SB w/ the 235 HP 5.4, E4OD AT and 3.55 LS rear. The economy ranged from 11-ish (winter commuting) (not 12-ish) to 18 (highway w/out AC). With me, the wife, two kids, stuff and our 3,250 lb pop-up trailer, we averaged 15.44 (not 14) w/ 89 octane gas on a summer '99 trip fron VA to VT and back.
The overall average while I owned the truck was... 13.5 (!)

My old 1990 F150 4x4 RC SB 5.0efi 5spd used to only give me 10mpg around town. My SD gets mid to high 8's (although with 5500 miles on it now, I'm going easy on the throttle this week and it looks like I'll get low 9's in town). I have a heavy foot and my 5.5 mile commute to work has 7 stop signs and 11 traffic lights, all on hilly terrain. So no wonder I get horrible mileage.
ForceV All I can tell you about weight is my '99 with full fuel, me and 100lb of misc gear weighed 7860 overall with 4640 on the front wheels and 3220 on the rear. Thats 59%Front, 41% Rear. Bear n mind I have probably 300 lbs of GearVendor, Cap, and Line-X helping things out toward the rear.

On your comment of the heavy front end w/ the diesel.. Take a close look at the engine compartment and you'll notice that more of the engine is situated behind the front axle rather than over or in front. So the heavier engine is not making the rear lighter.. If anything it's adding a bit of weight to the rear..
Regarding mileage:
I just turned the odometer over 10 k and am averaging almost 14 m.p.g. overall (13.95). I put about 1/3 of the miles are highway, 2/3 are to and from work. 12 miles, 4 stoplights. Love the 5.4 as I do only weekend towing of my wife's fishing rig....
I have to ask Harald; Are you constantly carrying the Alpenlite, and if not, what kind of mileage do you get with it on? I'm getting ready to trade my '95 PSD on a V10 and will carry a Lance 8.5 footer a couple of times per month.

watercop..I see you like to drop your sig on the mpg issue(on several occasions). And it's an impressive sig. But since you've thrown it in several times...I'll throw in that I have several friends with Psd's, one thing that THEY all agree on is the psd doesn't get as good as everyone claims. Before you blow your top I'm NOT saying your mpg isn't real, I'm just saying that the folks I know personally are not getting near the mpg you are. Not even close.
Actually just last Friday I was in a 4 Wheel Parts(610 South Loop location) and a guy with an EX psd was complaining about the mpg. He was spending his money on a pIII chip to try to get better. He was a little sore because he told the gentleman next to me he bought the psd for the mpg advantage.
You are very lucky to be getting the mpg's in your sig. Most are not. Me...check my sig!

Your signature really had me laughing. I have a 2000 with a PSD. I'm pretty happy with it. I considered a V10 and decided on the PSD.
Where I work there was a run on superduties this year. Mostly CC's like mine. I was the only guy who got a PSD, everyone else got a V10.
I get much better mileage then the V10 bunch, but pay for it (like the extra cost at purchase) in other ways.
Point here (other then your hillarious signature line) is that the SD's are really great trucks.... the V10 and the PSD and are both fine power plants.
Different strokes for different folks. I just don't understand the guys who have to insist that "my dog's better then your dog."
We all (mostly) like our trucks, whatever the engine, we would like to get the best fuel economy - prices are pretty high. And no one has a lock on having something better.
Of course, I gotta tease the gassers at work... and they tease me right back.

It's all in good fun. My point on the sig is it's just a sig. Ya know..I sig by any other means is just a sig.

But then again do I even own a SD? A Ford? Maybe I ride a bike everywhere? Maybe I live in a cardboard box under the freeway and write these messages from the library? Think about it. Maybe I didn't win the spelling be. Only my mouse knows for sure.

1. StevieD - Keep us posted on the V10 mileage - What kind of driving are you doing??
2. StevieD: Stick or Automagic?

1. My second fillup registered 13.5 mpg; just topped off this morning. I now have almost 600 miles on the truck. My driving is almost all level freeway at 65 mph with cruise, optimum conditions. This past week, I made several side trips in city traffic. That probably accounts for the lower mileage.
A friend got his V10 Lariat SC the same day I got my V10 XLT CC and yesterday he said he is averaging about 11 mpg. His driving is ALL in-town; short trips.
2. My truck is an automatic with 3:73 rear end. Just a couple of comments here. My old truck was a 5.8L automatic with 3:55 rear end. I have noticed that my new truck does not hold back as well as my old one going down hill after turning off the overdrive. I thought this was kinda strange since the gearing is lower. In regards to the tranny though, I love the new 4R100. My '95 had the C4 or C6 which came stock with the notorious Ford "heavy shifts". The new 4R100 is as smooth as a Chevy. No, I wouldn't buy a Chevy but, yes, they have always been known for having smoother automatic transmissions than Ford. Until now, that is.
I've been driving Ford trucks for almost 30 years and I have to say THIS IS THE BEST TRUCK I HAVE EVER OWNED. I LOVE IT. And I can't find even one little nit-picky thing to take it back to the dealer for. Everything is GREAT.
If you guys back at the Kentucky Truck Plant are reading, my compliments on a job excellently done. Keep up the good work. With trucks like this in the USA, those off-shore manufacturers (Toyota) don't have a chance. If they ever decide to build a real truck to try to compete with the SuperDuty.
