Gas Mileage

I have a 00' F250 Crew S/B with the V-10, Auto, 4.30LS 4x4. I carrier on vacation a Lance shelf contained camper made for the short bed. Trouble is no range with getting only about 6-7MPG. Any suggestions on what can REALLY help the mileage issue

Re: Gas Mileage

If you've been lurking here since April 2000, you know the answer is Nothing. Chip, exhaust, zoodad, etc. won't get you but maybe 1-2MPG at most. Maybe you should get a larger tank? Transfer Flow makes great tanks, but there's some problems with the replacement tank on CA emissions vehicles. Maybe a bed tank, uh, a camper tank? Or just squeeze in 4 more gallons when you fill up.

Re: Gas Mileage

Unfortunately, kenc is right. There's not much you can do to improve your mileage by more than 1-2 mph. I'm surprised you're only getting 6-7 though. I would have expected more than that even with the camper and the 4.30 gears. Although I hate to say it, if you really want better mileage you should probably consider trading in for the PSD. Re: Gas Mileage

I'm really surprised by your mileage (or lack of it). Mine is a 4x4 with 3.73 gears and I got 10.8 mpg repeatedly with my Lance model #1121 (much larger than yours)!!! And that is running at 5000' elevation. The WORST I got was 8.8 and that was into HEAVY 30-40 mph headwinds.

What speed are you running? I think if you just slow down, the 4.30's won't be revving as high and the wind aerodynamics are less resistant. I usually cruise around 62 mph with the camper. Just try going 55-60 and see what happens...if you really want better mileage that is

Re: Gas Mileage

Just have to add my two bits to the V-10 with Camper and mileage. I just returned from Lake Mead Nevada to my home Stanley Idaho. 700 miles each way with a Northland 990 Camper and a 16 foot runabout Boat in tow. My Truck is a Y2k F250 4x4 Supercab Manual 5 speed with 3.73's. Have only added the K&N Filter Charger and the Throttle Body Spacer, Synthetic 5-30 Oil followed by removal of the lead from my foot. Checked every fill up on the trip while never varying from 60mph. Mileage was 12.3 average over the trip with a low of 10.9 and most fills at 12-12.8 best. Also I do drive with a Vaccum Guage to help keep the mileage up.

Re: Gas Mileage

Just filled up after a weekend camping trip- first tow with new truck. About 150 miles total with the last half pulling 65-70 mph into a constant 30mph (gusting to 50) headwind (I sure hate the wind). Anyway, mileage was only 7.4 with OD turned off. Truck just rolled over 1000 miles tonight, so I hope things get a "little" better once break-in is complete. Then again, pulling a 8'x12'x26' 7000# "sail" into a hurricane isn't ever going to be economical.

Re: Gas Mileage

when I owned a v10 I noticed a jump in mileage at 10k miles. Wow never would have thought I would have had to wait that long for a break in. It was after a 2500 mile trip pulling 6000lbs. Soon after I noticed a 2 mile per gallon increse from 10mpg to 12mpg. I too had the 4:30 gears and a 4x4 250 crew. Pulling I got anywhere from 7-10mpg

Re: Gas Mileage

That mileage seems way too low. I get horrible mileage around town in my truck and it's not that bad. Carrying my camper on the highway, I get 9-10 mpg. I've experimented with speed vs mileage and can tell you that your mileage will drop considerably the faster you go. A camper may not be much weight, but it has the aerodynamics of a brick.

Some other things to consider is that mileage does seem to go up as the engine gets broken in. I've had 2 Super Duties now and noticed improvement with both. Also, around here they sell winter blend fuel that really drops the mileage.

Re: Gas Mileage

TruckFreak
Here's the latest on the mileage report. Just got back from towing my 16' boat over 2 mountain ranges (two 4000 foot summits). Total trip was 260 miles and speed was around 60 +/- mph. I also motored back and forth 1/4 mile every morning and afternoon to the boat dock and back with the fishing gear. I just filled up and got 12.8 mpg. (check my sig with 4x4, auto, etc.)

It is true that mpg improves as these trucks get miles on them. Mine has 6700 miles on it now, and I noticed a 1/2 mpg improvement at 5000 in "in-town" driving.

Re: Gas Mileage

I'll ditto the comments about the gas mileage getting better as you start putting some miles on these trucks. I noticed that when I hit about 12,000 to 15,000 miles on my truck the average mileage increased 1 to 2 miles per gallon. I have a 2001 F250 Supercab 4X4 with the 5.4 V8 for a work truck. I just turned over 6000 miles on it and my gas mileage is starting to get up around 12 mpg from around 10 mpg when I first got it. Sure is nice having 2 Superduty trucks sitting in the driveway! Re: Gas Mileage

I just returned home from a weekend in the Smokies with the family.. When i first got on I-40 west I got in line with a convoy of sports cars running about 85 mph. I laid in right behind and set the cruise. 3 hours later when I reached my destination, i was in front. they were sucking gas at 9000 rpm's and my superduty gained alot of respect from them. I taveled 290 miles on 21.8 gallons of gas so you do the math..13.3 mpg.. I just turned 3000 miles on the trip home. not pulling anything but the family but remember this is a heavy truck.. Need I say more... I LOVE MY V10.....

Re: Gas Mileage

I have been getting 10.9 mpg around town. The truck had 22.5k miles on it when I bought it two weeks ago. Just put a rollnlock bedcover on it last weekend and will be driving to Albuquerque this coming weekend. It will be interesting to see how it does on fuel. I wish I had taken a road trip before I installed the bed cover to see if there was any improvement.

Will post mileage Sunday night when I get back, it is 245 miles each way to Alb. from here.

Re: Gas Mileage

Without trying to get things stirred up, if you were really worried about mileage, you should of got the PSD.

Matt, I think that comment was rather unnecessary. Us folks who buy the V10 do not want to spend the extra $4000 to buy a PSD. The extra cost on a payment is reason enough. It takes a looooonnngggg time to recoup that money in gas savings when you add up the total cost of ownership of the two vehicles.

Now, does that mean that we can't find way's to improve mileage? Anyone that buys a V10 does not consider fuel mileage the most important thing, but that doesn't mean we can't or shouldn't find ways to improve it. Enough with the 'you should have bought a PSD' comments please!!!!!!

Re: Gas Mileage

With Diesel at 1.45 a gallon and regular unled at 1.75 agallon. 10 mpg vs. 18 mpg doesn't really take that long to recoup the extra money, especially when resale time comes around.

Just my $.02
