Gas mileage on a f350 V10 4.3 and more

Three questions:
1. What is the estimated gas mileage on a Ford 2002 F350 DRW Reg. Cab. Long bed, Auto Tran. with a V10 and the 4.3 rear pulling 13000# 5er?
2. Same question as 1. but not towing anything?
3. I asked this on the diesel board, what are the curb weights on the following:
As in #1
substitue SC in #1
4. What should I use to pull a 13000# 5er and not exceed the GVWR and the GCWR (20000) of an F350.

Lots of questions but we are getting close.

Re: Gas mileage on a f350 V10 4.3 and more

(corrected, now that I see you're asking about a DRW )

EMH,

Ford's tow guide says the 350 RC 4X2 DRW V10 AT 4.30 has GCWR of 20K lbs. and can tow a "maximum" 5er trailer of 14,100 lbs. Allowing for a 150 lb driver, that suggests the stripped (XL trim) truck's curb weight is 5,750 lbs.

My guess is the RC truck's curb weight will be closer to 6,000 lbs or so, and, once you add a hitch, yourself, another passenger and some other "stuff", the truck'll weigh in at around 6,800 to 7,000 lbs.

The SC will add another 300 lbs or so.

With a 11,500 lb GVWR and a 20K GCWR, the numbers suggest you'll be *just* OK towing a 13K trailer; the pin weight won't be an issue. However, Ford's tow ratings for gas powered trucks are based on sea level operation, and the GCWR should be derated by 2% for every 1,000 ft gain in elevation.

I'm considering such a combination down the line a bit. However, since I'm liable to want to tour in the Rockies, I'll probably go with a PSD (an extra 500 lbs) and the SC, so, going by the book, I'll probably be looking at a trailer at 12K lbs or less.

In your situation, it might be worth looking at the F450 with the V10 and 4.88 axle. It's GCWR is 24K

HTH,

Re: Gas mileage on a f350 V10 4.3 and more

EMH, here is what I got when I owned my '99 V10-5 speed/4.30 gear:

12-12.5 mpg empty, running around town, highway use too
9.5-10 mpg pulling my 13,000# trailer.

Yours may vary slightly but I think this should be in the ballpark.

Re: Gas mileage on a f350 V10 4.3 and more

My *guesses*

1) around 8 mpg (depends on how you drive)
2) 11 city/ 14 highway (depends on how you drive)
3a) Assuming XL 4x2 DRW LB, 6600 lbs
3b) Same as above w/SC- 6800 lbs
4) An F450. Next best is an F350 V10 w/4.30 gears Regular Cab 4x2 dually.

I pretty much agree with everything else stated in your post in the "Towing/Hauling" forum.

Why not "test drive" a couple over to the scales and get them weighed? Most big truck-stops have scales. Might cost $10, but at least you'll know the weight for sure.

Re: Gas mileage on a f350 V10 4.3 and more

Hi EMH,

I just posted my mileage in another post. My truck weight is:
Front axle 4240
Rear axle 3300

So my total empty weight is 7540 (or 7370 with no driver). This is with full fuel, Torklift Superhitch/camper tie-downs/front hitch, Firestone Ride-rite airbags and maybe 100 lbs of misc gear in the cab. I believe a SC weighs about 200 lbs less and a 4x2 is much lighter (I'm guessing 500 lbs?). I think you can get an idea from Ford's web site of how much less different options weigh.
