I did some testing on my Excursion gauges recently: http://forums.ford-diesel.com:8080/u...ML/002175.html
to evaluate upgrading the pressure gauge to analog.
...
You are correct, the pressure gauge gives 'digital' information, even though the gauge itself is analog. However, it was determined that the temperature gauge is indeed analog. Watch your temperature gauge before you start your engine (when cold). Then watch the gauge rise as it warms up.
...
I am going to install a temperature and voltmeter gauge. I did not test to see if the volt gauge was analog, but I'm not satisfied with the resolution of the OEM anyway.
...
Personally, I beleive the look of the pod / pillar mounted gauges is worth new gauges anyway.
...
When you buy gauges, keep in mind that some gauges are available in electrical or mechanical. For instance, a mechanical pressure gauge will require you to run an oil tube to the gauges (inside the car). Personally, I prefer to go all electric (where possible) to keep all the liquids out of the inside of the vehicle.
...
Another thing I've never seen discussed here is adding a connector to all wires at the pod. I personally am going to install small molex connectors at the pod so that I could easily remove the gauge pillar and gauges if necessary. Note, you can't do this for a temperature gauge that runs the thermocouple wires all the way to the gauge. Those are not slicable. However, most temperature gauges run a voltage sensor output wire, and not a thermocouple wire.
...
There is an article in the general area of this forum, that discusses the installation of different after market products on this site's 'Project Truck'. One section has a very good article on a pillar gauge installation. For instance, he indicates the ISSOPRO? gauge back lighting is a bit too bright. He indicates he replaced the existing bulbs with a 194? and it provides lighting equivalent the existing truck lighting.
...
I purchased my pillar mount and Autometer gauges from Diesel Injection Service.
...
I personally would be interested in someone doing a detailed report on installing the aftermarket sensors. For instance, teeing in to the existing pressure sensor.

I'm just wondering what gauges people have been adding for their gas engines. I'm sure I want a vacuum gauge, but I'm not sure what else would be useful. The only other things I could come up with would be coolant temp and oil pressure (since someone said those were dummy gauges anyway). Any other ideas. I'm not going to be towing very often.

Yes, that will help when I get ready.

My gauges fit very tight in the Tri-pillar openings. However, they tend to work their way out about 1/2 inch after I let go. Did you have this problem. And did you use anything to hold the gauges in the holes. Mine came with a 1/2 wide black rubber band, but that wouldn't stop them, from backing out.

No, I haven't had any problems with the guages working their way out. I filed my holes so that they fit snugly, but loose enough so I could rotate them and pull them out if I needed to. I didn't use any brackets to hold them in.
The wiring isn't bunching up against the factory trim piece and pushing the guages out, is it? That's the only thing I can think of.
