Getting tired of having to baby the final 5 gallons in.......

Of the two major complaints with my new truck, the most annoying is what a PITA it is to fill up the tank until it's full. I am not bringing it to the dealer unless I know there is a fix that they know of. Has anyone gotten anywhere with their dealer on this?

Re: Getting tired of having to baby the final 5 gallons in.......

After I heard about this problem with others on this forum, I filled up my gas tank as usual. After the pump shut off normally, I kept filling the tank. Very soon I was rewarded with gas coming back out of the tank onto my shirt Anyway, I certainly don't have this problem!

V10man you have to find a pump that goes really slow but it's true you can get 5-6 more gallons in.

Re: Getting tired of having to baby the final 5 gallons in.......

Perfect example tonight. I ran my tank farely dry, and the pump first clicked at 23 gallons. Again, I had to 'feather' the pump to get the additional 5 gallons in.

V10man, it appears as if this problem is more prevalent on the SB's, and not the LB's which you have. My buddy has a LB V10 and also does not have this problem.

Re: Getting tired of having to baby the final 5 gallons in.......

True on the long bed thing. The pump once clicked off on me at 37.5 gallons. I new I was close but not that close. I still miss the 2 tanks with the switch on my old 150. I loved to run it dry. I know that's not good but each pump lasted 11 years!

Re: Getting tired of having to baby the final 5 gallons in.......

Tony, I've found that I can get the rated 29 gallons in my short bed version with only one click of the pump IF I do not push the nossle in all the way. I actually keep it out about 3 or 4 inches. We have the gass recovery spring-loaded nossles here, and it is a little bit of a pain, but it is much better than babying the last 5 gallons. I also experimented and found that I can put about 31 or 32 gallons in if I keep going to the top. (I ran my truck almost dry while carrying a gas can in the bed to experiment.)

Re: Getting tired of having to baby the final 5 gallons in.......

Don, that's a great suggestion and I have actually tried that to no avail. No matter how fast or slow I pump the gas, the damn thing will always click at 23-24 gallons, and then I painfully have to get the last 4-5 gallons in. The gas tank appears to not be vented properly, and it is very annoying!!!

Re: Getting tired of having to baby the final 5 gallons in.......

Tony, how far are you letting the fuel guage go down? When I was doing my little experiment mentioned above, I found that I could actually drive over 50 miles after the needle read empty (I don't mean the light comes on - I can go maybe 70 miles after the light comes on.) You may not be actually using near all the gas you have. And with the extra 2 or 3 or so gallons you can stuff in the fill tube, it would add up. You ought to try running your tank empty (only once to calibrate your guage) while driving around with a gas can in your bed when you get real low. I think you'll be surprized.

Re: Getting tired of having to baby the final 5 gallons in.......

This might sound kinda odd but, a friend of mine has an old chevy and sometimes he has to turn the nozzle upside down to stop the pump from kicking off. Maybe try that?

On a side note, I have a LB and I have no problems. I can actually get a hundred or so more miles outta a tank a gas once the light comes on. I've only ever run out of gas once. Ironically it was right after I started the truck up to go get gas and I didn't even make it out of the driveway.

Re: Getting tired of having to baby the final 5 gallons in.......

So it looks like the LB is at least less prone than the SB. Does anyone have this problem with an LB?

Re: Getting tired of having to baby the final 5 gallons in.......

Try filling up at a pump that is not on a level surface, and fill up with the truck running down hill. This fills the tank as full as possible without the shut-off problem

Re: Getting tired of having to baby the final 5 gallons in.......

Tony
My SB 29 gal is only a couple of months old. I have same prob as you. I carry a small ramp I made out of cedar stump and chain saw 8"X8"X 24". If the right side or front is higher (even a little) she won't fill that last 4-5 gal. Left rear wheel on the block/ramp and it fill to the brim every time on full flow, one click and done Of course I do get the folks at the pump looking at me like I'm nuts but at least the minute it takes is shorter than the extra five min to top off

BTW I plan to replace the Ford tank with larger in same place... When I do the mod I will ask the folks at AREO if they can place several purge vents so I won't have this problem X 55Gal
