Good/bad about V-10s?

I'm looking at a '99 V-10 and wanted to know of anything in particular I should look for while inspecting/looking over the truck. I know there have been some issues with the plugs popping out, but besides that is there anything else I need to be aware of?

The truck I'm looking at is a 99 F350 w/102,000. Tranny was replaced two years ago, don't know why. Anything I should be worried about or suspect? I need a truck to carry a 2500 lbs camper and pull a boat/4-place snowmaching trailer.

Any help would be appreciated. BTW, is there a FAQ section for the V-10? I searched and couldn't find anything.

Thanks,
Slackjaw

The plugs popping out and the R4100 tranny issues are the only thing negative that I have ever heard of. Most of the guys that have V-10's from '99-05 have added headers, exhaust and intake, plus a programmer. All of that works well on the early V-10's. From 2006 to present, the hp on the new V-10's is about maxed out and not much one can do to up the hp. The early ones have about 300hp and the new ones are around 370hp. I think I remember that some early ones had exhaust leaks by the manifold, might check that too.

A rig with over 100k should be checked over real well for general maintenance issues; brakes, hoses, coolant change, belt/tensioner, flush and refill all fluids, etc.

Every Triton had manifold leaking issues. It was all just hit or miss on which ones actually had major problems. But I agree, the only major issues was spitting spark plugs, and the 4R100 was pretty well sorted out by 99.

Thanks...

My local Ford dealer (service department) said it was mainly the 5.4 spitting plugs and that some 6.8s had the manifold issues. The one I looked at was in excellent mechanical condition; it was quiet, no leaks, brakes were fine, no funny sounds. Everything checked out on it.

However, the truck has a reconstructed title-I'm going to start a new thread to ask about this. He said it had been rolled over. I wouldn't have known that if he didn't tell me so. It was rolled in '01 and he bought it in '02.

Slackjaw,

I have a 99 V-10, and it has been a really good truck. No transmission issues, not plug problems.
I have replaced one sensor, one coil, and the fuel pump.

Any "Triton" motor has the possibility of spark plug "spitting" problems after the plugs have been replaced just once.

I have an 03 v10. I have had no problems what-so-ever and more power than I need. All that I have done is install the hypertech power programmer and a flowmaster 5" exhaust. I love this motor. I have seen many with over 300k. I also had an 03 excursion with v10, no problems at all.

I had a 02' and now have a 06' both V10's with no engine problems at all. They pretty much got the plug spitting problem fixed in 02' and you don't hear anything at all about that happening nowdays.

I've got an '00 F-250 4x4 SC V-10/auto. My neighbor has a twin truck, but with a V-8/auto. His mileage is worse than mine, especially on the highway. There's no comparison as far as power.
