Header install problem

I finally had a couple days off, so I thought I would install my Borla headers. Borla and Truck Performance both told me the headers I received would have the correct EGR fitting to match the Ford tube. Guess what...they don't. I'm still waiting to hear back from either place to see what they are going to do to correct the problem.

On the other hand, a big THANKS to you guys for posting the problem. The first thing I did was remove the EGR tube and test-fit it in the header, so I didn't waste alot of my time with a doomed header installation.

Re: Header install problem

Good thing you tried it first. I'd imagine you would be one P.O. individual if you tore your whole exhaust appart. I would think Borla should send you the correct header with fitting "overnight express" Keep us posted.

Re: Header install problem

Hey Stan,
I just finished installing a banks power pack this weekend(headers and cat back). When you do have the correct headers also get from ford the O2 sensors. Even if you heat them they dont come out of the stock exhaust in a usable fashion. Brass threads so i guess they are not ment to be re-used.
good luck with the install. get a racheting box wrench for the headers makes the job a little easier.
also on the right side (passenger) if borla supplies a o2 sensor extenstion cable, hook it up before you get the headers back on. its a pain in the ass otherwise

Re: Header install problem

Hey Stan. I take it you were able to remove the old EGR fitting. If you take that fitting to a machine shop, have them cut it down to fit your new headers. You will then be able to attach the EGR line to the new headers.

I doubt you will find relief from BORLA.

If you are running the factory wheels you will feel a difference.

Re: Header install problem

Stan,

You have a50/50 chance of getting the O2 sensors out ok. One of mine was stubborn and got distroyed. Autozone has them for about $40.

Re: Header install problem

Thanks for the tips. I had to go buy a 1 1/4" socket and use an impact wrench to get the EGR fitting out of the manifold. It is brass, and a wrench was tearing it up.

How are you liking your new headers so far?

Re: Header install problem

I'll make sure the local auto parts stores have some O2 sensors in stock just in case.

Truck Performance emailed me Borla's customer service number. The guy at Borla said he would talk to the customer service director and call me back. If nothing else, I'll have the fitting on the header re-tapped for the Ford EGR adapter.

Re: Header install problem

Be sure to tell Borla that there are several hundred V10 owners interested in headers and if they don't get their act together you'll strongly recomend another brand.

Re: Header install problem

I also had the EGR fitting problem with the Borlas. I took HeavyAssault's advice and had my stock EGR adapter modified to fit the headers. It worked fine. Talk to Steve at Borla customer service and get him to pay for the machining cost rather than wait for new headers. I let him know that there are a lot of us talking about their product already but the more they hear it the more serious they will take it.

BTW I love the way my truck runs since the header install. I went camping and waterskiing this weekend and weighed the truck before I went out of town. It was 10,480# not counting the boat I was towing which was about another 3000#. I could hold 65mph on all of the hills over Turnigan Pass both ways. Also in spite of the time idling to load/unload my camper twice launch/retrieve the boat 3x etc. I got 9.5mpg. Before the headers I never got close to that milage unless I was empty on the highway. Headers, if you don't got 'em, get em!

Re: Header install problem

No word from Borla yet. Here's the Borla header install page I've started: http://www.eurekaboy.com/borla.htm

It also shows the fitting problem for those who might not understand what we're talking about.

Re: Header install problem

I have a 99 Pace Arrow with the v-10. What mufflers are you guys running or what would be a good single muffler for this that would be mellow but still allow for increased power. Thanks for the info

Re: Header install problem

Is that a motor home? I'd say Borla or Banks.
