Re: Home tricks?

Does this count?

Are you looking for "tricks" just for the engine?

Re: Home tricks?

Monsta,

Do you have any more info on this mod? Filter part number, cutting instructions? I know what I am going to try this weekend.

Thanks

Re: Home tricks?

You can e-mail the guy who did that mod. I just posted it for him.

The filter is just an off the shelf K&N.

Cut it with a dremel tool or something similar.

I took a different approach. Instead of removing as much of the old front as I could. (like he did) I cut the front of the box off right before where it started to taper down to the snorkel. About 2 inches of the filter sticks out and the cone from the stock paper filter has been glued to the aftermarket filter.

My thought, although a bit flawed, was to try and reduce the amount of engine compartment heated air from entering the intake but still de-restrict air flow. Only a true cold air intake would accomplish that.

Re: Home tricks?

That seems as though it would allow for more air intake, however it appears that the air is under hood air which is going to be HOT! I may be wrong but that is what I saw!

Re: Home tricks?

Really no difference than the K&N FIPK though.......

Re: Home tricks?

BA you are right. At idle there is gonna be quite a bit of heat built up underneath there. I would surmise a guess and say that while moving the temps would not be as severe. Maybe the extra air pulled in will be enough to compensate for the rise in intake temp. ???

It SOUNDS cool though...

LVNITUP,

First off the K&N should be available from a fairly reputable auto parts store. Easy to find.

And it does in fact differ from the FIPK. Some have called this mod, "The Poor Man's FIPK" but the FIPK air "tube" (for lack of better word) is MUCH straighter! It doesn't have that 90° bend after the MAFS like stock. I also think it is larger in diameter. The K&N also has a large plate that seals to the hood to help keep some of the heat away from the inlet.

BUT for a simple 1 hour mod, it's pretty cool. Just don't expect huge gains. Do, however, enjoy the added intake symphony!!

Re: Home tricks?

I wil agree with you on the bends adn the size of the "tube" on the K&N as compared to the stock.

I have a hard time believing though that the plate that seals against the hood stops the temp from rising aroudn the filter. Heat radiates and that little plate is going to warm up and so is the tube going into the throttle body. toush the hood sometime after driving....its warm too.

I know its still better......but I wish someone would to an actual comparison.....I can't beleive that it would be that much different other than the size of the "tube" making a difference.

Re: Home tricks?

The K&N number is E0945. Just double check before buying.

I did almost the same thing. Dremel tool works wonders in 5 mins. I left the sides, just cut the front end off where it starts to taper. I figured that would keep any water out of the filter. Plus I drilled three holes in the structure that the OEM funnel ran into the grill area. Looking at the truck with the grill off, you will see what I'm talking about. It is on the drivers side, kinda flat and REALLY hard to drill through with a hole saw bit. The name for that is the "ZOODAD" mod. IMO it should work like a RAM-AIR effect and the filter housing will "catch" the air. Keeping the entire housing with the smaller factory holes on the motor side may allow any water that enters to drain away before it enters the filter. Plus may help keep the underhood hot air to a minimum. Just $.02

Re: Home tricks?

My el-cheap-o intake mod was to use a tomato juice can and enlarge the snorkle opening with that. It's 4" in diamerer. I cut the end of the filter housing to fit the can, pop rivited it on and enlarged the metal support braket to fit the can. Did it add any poewr?? prolly not.

Re: Home tricks?

These simple intake mods are fun. But it is true that you'll be suckin' in hot air. Maybe not as much when you're moving. And, yes LIVNITUP, you're right that plate on the FIPK ain't gonna stop the heat.

Now you could insulate the entire intake snorkel with special heat reflective tape. That may be good for a few degrees.

The best is to pull it from the fender or somewhere isolated from the engine. Volant makes a TRUE cold air box for the 5.4L, I wonder if it'll work for the V10 since they share basically the same intake set-up.

Oh and heavyassualt, don't expect too much RAM AIR, if any. It takes many MPH to make my ram-air on my ZX-7R effective and it was designed to be ram-air.

Re: Home tricks?

I understand, it just has that effect. Getting fresh cold air directly to the filter without much obstruction. I'm getting my friends camera and going to post some pics to my site.
