Houston...we have a problem

I have recently noticed a knock on the drivers side when the engine is first started, nothing loud, but sounds like a lifter has bled down. This only occurs after truck has sat for about 8-hours. I know at one time there was a piston slap thing, but I don't think this is the case. All fluid levels okay, and doesn't matter if truck is level or not. Called dealership and we have an appointment next week. Note: in order to hear sound, windows must be down and wait for the introductory chime to finish..then start truck. Anybody else have this happen?????

Re: Houston...we have a problem

I've always noticed that if my truck sets for more than one day(which is rare) that when starting, it revs up real high and has something similar to what you explained, kind of a rattley knock. Doesn't last more than one second though. Couldn't be quieter though, after that initial surge.

Let us know what your dealer says.

Re: Houston...we have a problem

My boss has a V-10 in his motorhome and he has a noise after it sits a while. I thought that he was saying it took a couple weeks of sitting to happen. I can't remember exactly what they told him it was but they want to replace the engine. I don't see him every day but the next time I do I'll ask.
Whatever it was there was no concern about him using it until the off season.
Good luck!

Re: Houston...we have a problem

My brother has a 99 sd w triton v8 . Had the same thing happen to him when the truck sat and got cold and you started it up it sounded like a lifter tick Got REALLY bad in the cold winter mornings here in New England . Long story made short he is on his third motor w/only 53,000 on the odometer Ford dealer called ford and asked what do we do we hear what seems to be a lifter tick, Ford says don't touch we will send out another motor and when he picked up the truck for the third time there were six more motors going in other trucks.

Re: Houston...we have a problem

gossamer,
Sorry to take so long, I was on vacation and just talked to my boss again. He said that he was getting piston slap noise. Occasionally also a tappet noise, but mostly the piston noise troubled him. He was concerned that it would get worse after it was out of warranty and he'd be stuck with it.
He is just getting it back after a long block replacement, so I don't know if it is completely fixed or not. Have you been able to get anywhere with your dealer?

Re: Houston...we have a problem

...Yes, finally did get it into the dealer...tech heard the noise but could not pin-point where it was coming from. They called their tech hot-line and stated the problem. The tech line said noise on first start up is normal?!?! So, we are back to square one. I am thinking about going to some synthetic oil to see if that makes a difference. It is now starting to get colder here in ILL., so maybe I will take truck back for them to have another listen. Will keep all informed.
ON a good note, had the spring isolator tips replaced for the 3rd time, this time they are a different color(milky white) and seem to be working thus far, no squeaks!!

Re: Houston...we have a problem

My '97, 5.4, makes the same noise after it's been a day or so since it was started. Sometimes like valve noise, sometimes a little louder. Goes away in a few seconds before it idles down. Dealer looked at it overnight, found nothing wrong. I've used Mobil-1, 5-30 since 1500 miles, also in tranny
