As a follow-up to my 3.73/4.30 question following my attempt to order a new truck yesterday may I ask a couple of other questions regarding prices?
In the last few 5 years I have purchased 3 new vehicles, a Ford F-150, a Nissan Maxima, and a Honda Accord. In all cases I researched the invoice price via Edmunds or Kelly Blue Book. I offered the dealers $300 over the invoice price, they accepted and with no additional charges other than tax and title, I drove away in an hour or two with a new vehicle.
On Saturday I went in 3 area Ford dealers and found the following:
1) Dealer # 1 wanted $1500 over invoice. I said no thanks and went to dealer # 2.
2) When I asked dealer # 2 how much over invoice to order me a truck the answer was $500. I declined and drove away. Before I got out of the parking lot the salesman waved me down and asked what I would offer. I replied $200 over invoice. He said OK.
We went back inside and I handed him my printed work sheet from Edmunds for him to put the order together. When he returned from the computer and the sales manager with the vehicle order confirmation for me to sign, the cost did not match the number from Edmunds. The difference was two items at the bottom of the confirmation called US Gal Gas (order # 18) - $32.40 and FDAF Assessment (no order #) - $170.00. Also the dealer added on a $66.50 admin fee! I declined and left.
1) Dealer #3 - Same cost as dealer #2 but admin fee of $172.50!
Questions for those who have bought new trucks recently especially those who ordered.
1) Are the two extra items the norm?
2) How about the advertising fee?
3) How much over invoice have others paid recently?
4) Anyone know a dealer within 300 miles of North Alabama that I can deal with and not feel like I should be on guard every minute for added costs?
Invoice generally does not include the fuel and FDAF..
Most dealers I know of do charge an FDAF and other small fee's..
$500 over invoice is a pretty fair deal for both you and the dealership.. Sure, some folks can claim they paid less, but for sure some folks paid more..
Even with all of those fee's applied it's still a good deal.. They offered it to you once before, I'm sure they'll do it again..
I would talk to someone in Internet/Fleet sales before talking to the commissioned salesguys.
I ordered my truck through the same guy I bought my Expedition from and he told me straight-up
I would be paying invoice when I told him I wanted a SuperDuty. I eventually got it for less
than invoice since I did the X-plan. The floor guys rarely seem to want to deal in my neck of the
woods and the Internet guys ALWAYS quote the best prices.
Just my .02¢

Ordering a truck has to be the best way a dealer makes money. The dealers make 3% of the retail price in hold back. Basicly money Ford gives the dealers to help pay for advertising and other expenses. 3% of a $30k truck is $900 plus the $300 you want to pay is $1200 for just ordering you a truck and delivering it when the time comes. You need to decide how much profit is fair for the dealer to make. Getting below invoice is rather tough however. I paid $800 over back in Sept of 98 when getting a Superduty was tough. It was the best deal I could find.

For me, Ordering on a clean deal is the ONLY way to go. First, if I am going to spend that kind of money, I damn well am going to get every little detail "Just right". Also, by ordering the dealer does not have to finance it, so it costs them less to sell it. It is straight thru. You negotiate the price and then sit tight until it comes through. Anything worth having is worth waiting for.
Road Racer, Those two items you mentioned, are yes the Norm. They were on my invoice when I ordered my truck. Admin fee (paper work)of 66.00 is pretty cheap. I believe those items (Not the admin fee cost) are required. Those two fees were even on the invoice of a truck I was looking at the dealer and didn't order. Not because of the fees but because they want $1000.00 over invoice.

If you look under the "Ordering Information" forum you'll see that many people have been able to order with X-plan pricing (1 to 1 1/2% under invoice) by joining the Experimental Aircraft Association (www.eaa.org) for $40. I haven't done it personally, but it seems like the way to go for a good, hassle-free price.
FDAF and gas are normal expenses. I've paid those on the last couple trucks I've ordered. The Admin fee is pure dealer markup and I would balk at paying that.
The last truck I bought was a factory order. I could have had one for invoice plus $0, but that dealer really lowballed me on the trade. I ended up going with $500 over invoice from another dealer because he gave me $3000 more on the trade. In both cases, I just talked to the fleet sales guy who is also usually (but not always) the internet sales guy. Don't even talk to a salesman on the floor.

The truck was ordered two weeks ago and from the dealer who offered me a $200 over invoice plus the $66.50 admin fee. I held my ground on the admin fee and they took it out of the $200 so I ended up paying the fee but paying only $163.50 over invoice.
The salesman said it would take 10-12 weeks for delivery. Is that a good estimate?
