How is V10 with Manual Trans?

I am thinking of getting a F250 4x4 SC V10/5spd...

How is driving the V10/5spd vs the auto?

Any problem cruising 75-80?

Had any problems with the 5spd?

Re: How is V10 with Manual Trans?

Mine's only two weeks old, but I like it. The transmission is notchy, but it only has 600 miles. I hope it loosens up some.

70 MPH is about 2300 RPM, I think. It will cruise at 80 MPH all day. I have 3.37 gears.

Re: How is V10 with Manual Trans?

I owned a 99 V10 AUTO 3.73 axle and now I own a 01 V10 5-SP 4:30 LS axle. Hands down I prefer the 5-SP. Like Mark said a little notchy but feels much better than the Auto.

The 4:30 axle at 65 mph runs approximately 2400 RPM. The V10 can run there forever without breaking a sweat.

Re: How is V10 with Manual Trans?

RBM, how does that Banks exhaust sound? I've driven both the auto and manual, both with 4.30's and the manual feels a lot less sluggish than the auto. I'm planning on getting the 5spd with my new truck (if and when I get one).

Re: How is V10 with Manual Trans?

Banks system sounds nice. At idle gives nice low frequency sound to the V10. When your running it hard the sound is not overbearing inside the cab.

I think you will be much happier with the 5 Speed if you do not mind shifting.

Re: How is V10 with Manual Trans?

I also much prefer the feel of the 5sp vs auto. In my opinion, I felt the 5.4L with the 5sp felt snappier than the V10 with an auto. I can't imagine what the V10 would feel like.

The 5sp tranny is notchy, and after a year and 17k miles it still remains that way. I've heard others report if you replace the tranny oil with synthetic (Amsoil perhaps) that shifting is a becomes smoother.. But face it, its a truck tranny, not a sports car.

1st gear is only necessary to use if your pulling or hauling a heavy load. (its about the same ratio as the 'low' gear of the 6sp found in the PSD trucks).

Re: How is V10 with Manual Trans?

If the 5-spd in the new V-10's is the same as the ZF 5-spd in the PSD's, it's a great transmission! You NEVER hear of problems with it like you do with the NV-4500's and 5600's in the GM & Dodge goats. I had New Process 435's (now New Venture) in a couple F-150's, creeper low, direct drive 4th. 4-spds, and the synchro's would never hold up in them. I haven't used my PSD like I used the old trucks, but it still shifts like new at 140K.

Re: How is V10 with Manual Trans?

For the guys with the v10 and manual trannies, what kind of mileage are you getting? Just to compare with the auto.

Re: How is V10 with Manual Trans?

I'm averaging 13 mpg around town empty. I only have 800 miles on my new CC so far. I use 87 octane with stock engine no mods...yet.

Re: How is V10 with Manual Trans?

13 mpg from a crew sounds good to me. My 94 1/2 ton with a 302 is getting about 11.5 right now. Usually get 14-15, but last 3 tanks have been real bad.
You guys on this forum keep talking me into the v10 more and more each time I check the posts.
