Hello,
I picked up my truck from the dealer tonight after having a paint blemish repaired and on the way home I noticed a fairly loud howling noise coming from the rear of the truck. You could only hear it when traveling at 65 mph and up. The faster you went the louder it got. I noticed that when I let off the gas it would go away. I was wondering if this could have been some kind of resonance in the exhaust system or something. My truck has the 4:30 rear end so at the fore mentioned speeds it was turning between 2,400 and 2,700 rpm. I will also note that the truck only has 300 miles on it. Any ideas on this one?
Thanks,
TB

My '00 does the same thing. At 70mph, it'll drown out the radio. It's definitely not the tires, as the sound changes with movement of the accelerator pedal. I plan on taking mine in to see if they will/can do anything about it.
I also have the same howl at the same RPM range on my new 2001. I am fairly certain this is the exhaust resonance problem. On my 99 F250, I had the same problem. The dealer was going to perform the TSB, but I decided to put a Flowmaster 40 series with a custon cat back exhaust. No more noise.
NoMo,
Have you had any resolution to this problem. I took mine to the dealer and the service manager gave me this stupid spiel about how he thought that it was normal and just a characteristic of the truck. I can tell you this, I wouldn't have ordered it with a 4:30 rear end if I new that it was going to be like that.

I've not yet taken the truck in for service. I've kind of been waiting to see how the new Y-pipe is working out for everyone. When I do take it into the shop, I'll let you know what they say.
If your rear-end is a dana 80 and has a howl..ya probably will have to live with it..unless you press the issue with Ford.
Just had the rear-end replaced in my E450/Class C motorhome (y2k)..Ford tried to sluff-off the problem by trying a "dampened driveshaft"...didn't work...Ford/Dana had to replace the complete Rear-end. Dealer/FoMoCo had the vehicle tied-up for 2 months, and now I'm going thru the lemon law crap.

Can't remember what the TSB was for sure, but it had to do with an exhaust resonance at a certain RPM range causing a resonance and slight vibration. It was up in the 65mph range that it occurred on my 99. The fix was to hang a weight of some sort on the exhaust at a certain position to cancel out the resonance. I ended up putting a cat back system on that truck, and the problem went away.
MNguy,
So I take it that you installed the cat back system on your 01 then or did you have that problem on the new truck? What does a cat back system run?
On a side note how far away from Edina MN is Prior Lake? I work for Cargill in their steel division and I was up your way last week on business. Minnesota is nice country.
