Hello fellow Oregonian! Welcome to the site. What you have encountered is the infamous "Flutter" common to a lot, if not most, of V10's including mine. Fords attempt to "fix" this are anemic at best. See the other discussions about the "wye pipe" etc. This discussion is directly related to "flutter". You may also do a search for "flutter" to see related threads in the past.
Its an exhaust "resonance" at specific rpm's directly related to the Wye exhaust set-up. It's not harmful, only annoying. Mine makes it at 2300-2600 rpm and most noticeable under moderate to firm acceleration.
Welcome to the flutter club

I have a HUGE favor to ask of you V10’ers out there, especially those of you with a 1999 Superduty. I need you to run an experiment.
Hop in your unloaded truck and drive down a straight and flat road in second gear (automatic transmission) and spool the engine up to about 3000 rpm’s and hold it there. What do you hear from the engine?
This is what I hear: There is the god awful pinging sound from the engine, like a thousand pi$$ed-off rattle snakes. Sounds to me like preignition because when I floor the throttle, the pinging sound goes away. I run low to medium grade gas (87 to 89 oct.)
When I fist got the truck (used about 20,000 miles), I noticed the sound during light to medium acceleration between 2400 and 3000 rpm’s. Concerned, I took the truck to my caring compassionate Ford dealership who informed me that they could not hear any abnormal pinging sounds from the engine (of course). Since then, I have learned how to consistently reproduce the sound.
Thanks for helping me with this. Let me know what you hear.

This sounds like the perfect excuse to tell the wife I need exhaust headers, high-flow cat, and high-flow muffler. So if I could get a few of you to post a message about the extreme dangers of “flutter” such as, how it destroys the ozone, causes cancer, is largely responsible for global warming, and makes the TV reception fuzzy, then I could print them out for my wife as evidence for necessary upgrades to our truck.

Hi. I never noticed the flutter until I put on a Banks Stinger system. It opened up the intake and exhaust enough that I can now hear it distinctly ay about 2200 to 2500 rpm. I just have to accelerate thru that zone faster now and its not to bad. Trying to trade for a diesel, but have a wife that don't think I need that. lol Anyway, as with the other answers, I think you have the Flutter also. Good luck!
