Just pulled a Jeep from Houston to Colorado
I just returned from a 10 day vacation to Colorado. I pulled my girlfriends 2001 Jeep Wrangler, full of luggage and tools (approx. 4,000lbs), from Houston to Grand Junction, Colorado (about 1200 miles). My truck is completely stock...except for a Billet grill which I think is worth at least 5hp
I wanted to make a few comments about my first "towing trip." I absolutely loved the responsiveness and the power of the V-10. On the way there we averaged 9.5mpg and on the way home it was 10.3mpg. The truck pulled it up some very steep passes in Colorado and New Mexico with no sweat. "Raton Pass" in New Mexico is only 7,800ft, but is extremly steep in getting to the top. My truck was able to maintain 65mph....she was on the wood but she would keep a steady 65mph ...faster than a lot of the cars pulling nothing. I had a huge on my face.
The biggest difference I noticed while pulling was the braking. The brakes took considerably longer to work and much more pressure was required on the pedal. I was able to cruise 80mph on the flats with no problem and pass cars reasonably easy. We had enough room for the 2 of us, 2 dogs, camping gear, etc....it was awesome
My overall impression is...I LOVE THIS TRUCK. I am as pleased with it pulling 4,000lbs as I am when it's empty/light. I definitely bought the truck for me...especially when I paid $19,500 for it (35K miles). In Texas these trucks almost sell for their weight in gold.
