K&N air filters

I had heard that the use of K&N air filters were causing the Mass air sensor to go bad. Is that true. Has any one using those filters experienced any adverse problems? My filter is due to be changed and I am thinking of installing a K&N to replace the old factory filter.

Re: K&N air filters

Well, last fall my '01 Expedition w/5.4 and K&N air filter started hesitating and stumbling when accelerating from a stop. Took it to the shop and found out the mass air sensor had gone bad due to being coated with oil. Dealership replaced the sensor under warranty but they told me it was the oil from the K&N that killed it. They also said that they liked the K&N filters but had replaced several mass sensors on other trucks that had K&N filters. Just don't over oil it and make sure there's no excess oil on the filter. I oiled mine like the instructions said and let it sit for a few hours before re-installing. Must not take too much extra oil to kill the sensor.

Re: K&N air filters

You can clean the wires with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol if your really gentle.I haven't cleaned my filter yet,Hopefully Mine doesn't get gummed up.

Re: K&N air filters

I've always ran a K&N filter in all my cars and trucks... The only one I ever had a problem with was my last Ranger. Here's the link I used to clean the sensor...http://www.therangerstation.com/CleanMAF.html

Hope this info helps you make up your mind.
