K & N Gen. II Filter and Intake/Borla Cat-Back

Has anyone installed the K&N Generation II Filter and Intake system on their V-10? If so, what results in power/mileage have you noticed? Do you have a cat-back exhaust as well?

Anyone have experience with the Borla cat-back system on a V-10 Excursion? Did you notice a change in power/mileage? How about noise level in the vehicle?

I drive at higher altitudes, 4,500ft+, and am considering the K&N Generation II with a Borla cat-back exhaust on my Excursion.

I have the K&N gen II kit and a Magnaflow cat back dual exhaust. I don't know if the high altitude would make a difference but here in corn country the mods I made did not even make a noticable power increase, but it looks & sounds cool.

Re: K & N Gen. II Filter and Intake/Borla Cat-Back

The air filter prolly adds about 5hp and the cat-back maybe 10-15. Our trucks are so heavy I doubt you'll notice the difference. I added a K&N and a Borla single 3" and didn't notice any real gains either.

Re: K & N Gen. II Filter and Intake/Borla Cat-Back

Banks Stinger kit includes both a high flow K/N type filter/housing, and their 3 1/2" Monster exhaust with Dynaflow muffler (catback). They also optionally provide a chip they call Ottomind. They quote improvements, with Ottomind like -1.00 second 0-60 mph, +0.37 mpg towing, -.67 second 40-60 mph. Best gains 18.1% HP and 18.1% torque, both @ 4400 rpm. All on regular gasoline!

I'm considering the Powerpack which includes their headers that they call Torque Tubes, Ottomind, and Transcommand, which firms up the transmission, for towing.

They have a sale going this time of year. www.bankspower.com

Re: K & N Gen. II Filter and Intake/Borla Cat-Back

Thank you for the information. I looked at their site and they did not list any applications for the Excursion. Although the intake should be the same, the cat-back is probably different for the Excursion. I sent in a question about this and am waiting for their response.

It's unfortunate that SDV10 did not see any gains. I wonder if Banks' system makes a real difference, matching their claims.

Re: K & N Gen. II Filter and Intake/Borla Cat-Back

W-N, Banks does offer an application for the Excursion. Contact Joey Greenwood, jgreenwood@bankspower.com, with your questions. He can send you the info you want. Mention you saw a recommendation on the ford-diesel site.

Re: K & N Gen. II Filter and Intake/Borla Cat-Back

If you check both the manufacturers and various magazine's charts, you find that there is the 10-20 hp increase they advertise. Problem is that it manifests at around 5000+ RPM. In my 5.4 that's screaming (which I seldom do).

However, comma, you do get a better sound from the Borla catback and, presumably, the loss of the "exhaust flutter" that makes these Superduty gassers sound like diesels. Also better air cleaning if you believe what K/N says. The big thing is that you're on your way to getting the real power increase you're looking for. The Gen II plus the catback PLUS headers, a larger MAF orifice, a larger throttle body, and, maybe (haven't tried this) the spacer everyone seems so hot for that lengthens the t=body flow-through will show a noticable difference. Particularly in the mid range and down low where most of us want it.

I still maintain that if you're looking for more hp/torque in the rpm range most of us deal with (even on the freeway), getting your diffs boosted up to 4.56 is the quickest, cheapest way to make the truck a tire-burner and still run about 3K rpm at 70mph.

Regards,

Re: K & N Gen. II Filter and Intake/Borla Cat-Back

Hello everyone. I installed the Banks stinger system on my V10."K & N filter, with cat back monster exhaust. I have not noticed a great change in mileage or power. Maybe pulls my 5er just a pinch better. However, that 3 1/2 exhaust and 4 inch chrome tip look mighty impressive sticking out the side. Muffler is just a little to quiet, but sounds good when you put a good load on it up a hill. Banks is nice system, but pricey. Good luck with whatever you do.

Re: K & N Gen. II Filter and Intake/Borla Cat-Back

Well, it just passed a week since I sent an e-mail to Banks about products for my X and still no reply. If they won't respond to a potential customer before the sale, I'd hate to see how they are after it. Does their customer service department really exist?

BTW - Thank you everyone for your replies so far. I appreciate the input.

Re: K & N Gen. II Filter and Intake/Borla Cat-Back

W-N, Did you send the e-mail on the web site? I sent one too on the site, and didn't receive a response. I think that the web site is fairly new and needs more work.

If you contact Joey Greenwood at jgreenwood@bankspower.com, I'm sure you will receive a reply to your questions!

Re: K & N Gen. II Filter and Intake/Borla Cat-Back

Give them a little time. It took over a week for me to get their v-10 pkg in the mail. That was a few weeks ago. Problem with this time of year is, of course, Christmas. Also, don't know about Banks specifically, but many places have worker shortages due to a lot of people trying to use up their vacation time before they lose it at EOY.

When the weather warms up and money permits (anyone want to buy a boat ) I'm shooting for the full powerpack.

Re: K & N Gen. II Filter and Intake/Borla Cat-Back

Since I have not heard from Banks, I took 3992824's advice and sent an e-mail to Joey today. I'll let you know what his response is.

Thank you everyone for your comments.

Happy Holidays!!!
