K&N Generation II

Anybody install the generation II K&N system on their V10? Is it worth the $299 my local accessories shop is selling them for? There must be a better price available maybe in the internet.

I wonder what, if any, horsepower/gas mileage increase the system provides?

Thanks.

Re: K&N Generation II

No noticable increase in performance, or mileage. It looks cool thats about it.

Re: K&N Generation II

I thought about putting one in too (the Gen II) but opted for just their standard filter (K&N). I've read that no one has noticed any MPG difference, but the way I look at it if you replace the stock element 3 times you payed for the K&N and it still will last "forever". Also on my last G*C (did I really say that?) I never did clean it (the K&N) in 2 years of on road driving and it was still "clean". I don't know if the expensive set-up would be worth it or not? However the filter alone is in my book (I have 4 total in all my rigs) Hope this helps..

Re: K&N Generation II

I've had K&N's on Lots of diff. vehicles, from 5.0L HO Mustangs, '93 Lightning, and I put one in my PowerStroke Diesel. I just serviced it for the first time in about 70,000 miles. I installed it in place of the factory air filter at about 70K. I DIDN"T LIKE WHAT I SAW when I opened the Filter. The compressor vanes on the Turbo were covered with a black substance, Dirt & Oil mix. The filter itseld was MUCH dirtyier than the factory filter, But I think I'm going back to the pleated paper element. I think the K&N passes More Air for sure, it eliminated a hesitation in building boost, but I don't think the 1 to 2 psi of boost and shorter engine life are worth it. The K&N was designed for use on racing engines for desert motorcycles and made bigger to fit cars & trucks. These engines are disassembled & rebuilt EVERY RACE in the Pro ranks. I'm looking to get 300 to 400 THOUSAND MILES of Life out of my PSD and I think I've jeapordized That already. I had the oil analyzed about 5 to 6 thousand miles ago and the silicon content was low. It appears everything passing through the filter was small. No nicks on the compressor vanes. The kind of stuff that gets into the oil & grinds the rings & bearings up! As has been said on the 94-97 PSD sight, You can see Large points of light through the filter meaning it won't filter well. If You want more air volume, Get it with a Much larger element or ElementS, Not a less restrictive filter. Current A/F technology is cleaning by "IMPINGEMENT" which means trapping particles of dirt in small spaces. Some of the spaces in a K&N are Quite Large!

Re: K&N Generation II

Thanks all for your input - darn, everywhere I turn (supercharging and K&N so far), sounds like the drawbacks outweigh the benefits.

I guess I now need to explore exhaust options.

Thanks.

Re: K&N Generation II

I took the same approach as outpost22 for the same reasons.

After the wettest (water ingestion possible) and driest (dust ingestion possible) years in OK history, I've not found any oil or dirt in the intake system. Even after this, the intake was clean (nothing else was!).
