Leaky exhaust by design?

My exhaust has a 9" pipe spliced between the converter and the muffler. Two metal straps hold the splice in place but each end leaks enough that carbon deposits are appearing on the underside of the pipe at the splice points. The straps appear as if they need to be moved more toward the end of the splice but they are tack welded in place. Also there are a couple of round studs that might cause the joints to continue to leak even if the straps were moved out.

Anyone else have this problem? Solution?

Thanks,

Re: Leaky exhaust by design?

The extra length is probably there to compensate for additional vehicle length. Other than replacement of the exhaust system (cat-back), the only option would be to have the pipe welded. The pins (studs) appear to be for alignment- of the clamps??

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. Mine is exactly the same.
