Looking for a CC 4x4 V10, what problems?

My brother is looking for a used V10 and I'm trying to help. He wants a crew cab 4x4 short bed lariat that hasn't been abused.
What problems did the V10 engines have and it what years?
The only thing I am aware of is the spark plug issue on the pre- 2005? engines. Can this be addressed if he gets an older truck?
Anything else to check?
I guess a compression check would be good, any other tests to run?
Thanks for any replies.

PS- What tuners to look for that could indicate abuse?

Actually from what I remember the spark plug issue was fixed by 2001. Best V-10 years IMHO would start in 2005 due to the increased HP and the adding of the TorqueShift tranny. Other than that any year for a V-10 would be a good one. You might have to add some over-the-counter goodies to boost the hp and the old style R4100 tranny might be a little weak, but the engine will do you fine.

What year was the 3-valve V-10 introduced? I had a '99 2-valve V-10, I would probably hold out for a 3-valve, it's a much better motor.

2005 is the first model year for the 3-valve V10.

The number of threads holding the spark plugs in were increased around the 2003 model year, but some early 2003 models are not.

He must be a very lucky dude to find a "used" 2008 V-10. I sure love mine and the '08 ergo's are fantastic. I smile every time I get in my truck. Keep us posted on the '08 section from now on.
