Does anyone know when ford started to use mass air on f-150's ? Also what is a better intake to use a stock truck intake or mustange. Thanks for any help.
My buddy is putting a 65 ford truck body on a newer 93 f-250 frame and runnning gear. He was wondering about when ford started to use mass air so he can figure out what computer he needs for fuel injection, etc. He is gnna run either a 302 or 351m
I know my 94' E350 with the 351 did not have a MAF. It used a MAP and intake air temp sensor instead.
As for intake... I think an intake from a newer pickup or van (with the 5.4/6.8L) would have best highest flow. They allow for a conical filter which will have the better flow than the OBS fords with the panel filters. The mustang probably does too, but the truck/van intakes should be a larger diameter. Both the truck and van use the same filter, but the truck draws from the fender well, and the van draws from in front of the radiator. I do think the Ford intakes are superior to most aftermarket "cold air intakes" because the factory intakes actually do draw cold air, where most of the aftermarket junk allows engine bay air in.

If I remember correctly, 89 (302) was the first year the Mustang ran a MAF. prior to that, it ran Speed Density. There are lots of aftermarket (and Ford) conversions out there to convert to Mass Air if you (or your Buddy) finds yourself with a motor set-up that doesnt have a MAF.
A 351m never had mass air. It seems like to me that 1996 was the first year for mass air on the 351w. If you are going to use a 302 use the Mustang EFI. There is a lot more stuff available for it.
