A couple of questions for those who might know. I'm almost ready to order a 2001 XLT 250 SD SC SB 5.4 Auto. Most mileage post fail to mention whether they have caps and other light to medium cargo and how that effects mpg.on the 5.4 auto. Other question. Have read some posts of people with 2001 5.4's with 3.73 rears. In Edmund's stats for this truck, Ford does not offer a LS 3.73 for the 5.4 only a 4.10 in 2001. I am not planning to tow anything large and if I do, it will be a small travel trailer or under 3000 lb boat. Any help with which rear for best mpg would be helpful. I appreciate all the great information you folks put out there. Been driving an 88 F150 SC SB Lariate which needed extra springs.Had trouble carrying it's own shadow.Looking forward to stepping up.
I have a Y2K F250 SD 4X2 CC SB XLT with the 5.4, auto and 4.10 ls axle. I usually run either fairly empty or fairly full, with 4~5 people, "stuff" and towing a 3,250# pop-up camper.
I see ~11 mpg on my suburban commute and about 16 running empty on the freeway (no cap). I just returned from a 5K trip out West, and averaged 12.8 mpg (loaded as above).
I think the 3.73 axle is too long, and therefore sluggish, for the SD+5.4+auto combo. I dove an Excursion equipped this way and didn't like it; I am happy with my 4.10.
The 3.73 with the SD+5.4+5 spd manual seems to work (1st gear is long). Member cphilip has a 250 equipped this way and seems to like it -- check his towing posts.
BTW, one of my brothers has a SD confured like mine but with the V10 and 3.73 -- it works just fine, and his mileage is just 1 mpg shy of mine.

I have a '97 250ld, sc, 3.73ls, sc, and pull about 8000 lb trailer--with a passenger and hitch & stuff, probably close to my 8600 limit. The truck is probably 6-7 hundred pounds lighter than a SD, so I would think the performance would be close, even though you would have 260 hp. Mine is 235 hp. I would very much like more power, as I've gone up 6% grades in CO, and Montana as low as 30-35 mph, in 1st. I wish I had a 6.8--probably equipped with a 4.10. Mileage at 60-65mph is pretty constant at 14.5-14.8mpg, unloaded

once you have a diesel you don't go back.
gas engine 351 was getting 12.5 mpg then went to diesel and getting 18-22.5. most of the time its 19. I like to step on it so I don't get over twenty. my friend has a v10 4x4 ford f350 reg cab and he gets 6 miles per gallon. he usally drives with his for sale sign in the back window. hes getting a diesel.
dodgeboy, the request was for the mileage for a Ford V-10, not a DOdGe. My Ford V-10 has given 14.6 mpg. You appear to be here to advertise how great a DOdGe is. You're posting the same all over the place. We all know better. SamC
See my configuration below. Very similar to your requested info regarding mileage. I have right at 9000 miles on my rig, tow a 4000 lb. trailer 25 miles about 6 times a month and have got exactly 14 mpg overall since mile 1. I put alot of highway miles on my rig going back and forth to the Outer Banks of NC. I love the 3.73 rear end cruising down the highway. These gears would be a bit tall for towing loads much heavier than what I tow but this config works great for me. Hope this helps....
Dogboy, you're "friends" truck may be getting 6 mpg. Sounds like he should figure out whats wrong. My CC DRW V10 with 4.30s gets
at least 7.5 when pulling 12 K. 11 when empty. And I'm sure its probably not true that most d**ge drivers are gay. Its probably not true, either that diesel smoke is carcinogenic. Probably two rumors started by jealous ch**y owners!
