Spent some time reading the owner's manuals while at the lake this weekend and noticed an important fact:
No where did it state that you must use any specific weight of oil. It does, however, recommend 5W-20. The only requirements for the oil is that it must meet the Ford specification (long code with letters & numbers).
It might take a 20-weight oil to meet the specification, but that's another issue.
Backbone, I asked for opinions on the oil and he gave it. If you don't like it, you don't have to listen to it. Go vent somewhere else please.
Also, the manual for my 2000 GASSER recommends 5W-30, not 5W-20.

I said Ford released an SSM ( Special Servise Memo). If you can find a good dealer ask them to look up SSM on oil for 2000 and up vehicles.
I am just trying to help people who come here looking for correct info, and read that someone FEELS they can use 5W-30 in a 2001.
I am a by the book type person when it comes to fluids.

I am a by the book person too, and my book says 5W-30 for my truck. I don't doubt that there is an SSM somewhere that says 5W-20 is acceptable, but my original owner's manual calls for 5W-30. Since my truck is a 2000 and the manual says 5W-30 is good, then I don't think that Tony feeling like 5W-30 is okay for them is such a bad thing. That may be a different story for the 2001 models, but as far as I'm concerned, there's nothing wrong with running 5W-30 in the 2000 models. Personally, I don't think any dealership will void a warranty for using 5W-30 when they recommend 5W-20. I may be wrong, but that's just what I think.
No hard feelings, I just don't think it's necessary for us to jump all over each other. I didn't really start this thread to discuss weights, because I already plan to use 5W-30 because it's readily available and that's why my book calls for. I was really just wanting to know if Mobil 1 Synthetic was a good oil to use. Thanks for you comments.

FYI: Mobil 1 is the ONLY Sythetic Oil used as a Factory fill from ANY Manufacture. It is Factory fill for all Corvettes and Mustang Cobra aaalso some BMW's. Mobil 1 is the best because you can go to any Mobil station and get it in a pinch.
Again I am just an oil nut. Bob Riley and I have had some goods posts disputing each other.

quote:
Originally posted by Back Bone Test Man AKA: Wayne B: I sure would like to have access to Ford documitation like you must!!!!!
So you look at the motor and can tell that all the clearances are the same as for 2000.
Well maybe they are. But then again Ford has an SSM out that the 2000 should use 5W-20 also.

It's not hard to see that kind of stuff when your brother owns a shop. Where did I ever say that I can look in motor and tell the clearances? Re-read the post so you can understand.

quote:

Ford has found that using the 5W-20 has given better millage AND causes less wear at START UP!!!!!
But Ford only spends MILLIONS of dollars every year on research and development, So what the HELL can they know.
Can I please see your docmintation to back up your statement.

Where is your documentation to back up your statement? All I said is there is not one shred of evidence that say's 5w-30 will damage you motor. If you can find it, please share it with all of us. If you can't find it, then shut up.

quote:

Use what ever oil you what!!!
But PLEASE do not recommend your FEELING to people requesting addvise on this site.
I get so mad when people give people addvise that could hurt there motors and leave them with a big bill to PAY when the warranty is Voided because they have 5W-30 in the motor.

This forum is a forum about opinions. I am free to share my opinion, and regardless of what you think I will continue to do that. If you think that I am giving bad advice, then that's your problem. I relayed my PERSONAL experience with Mobil 1 oil, not what I read or heard from someone else. If you don't find that valuable, then that's too bad for you. Like I said, there is ZERO proof anywhere that's say's 5w-30 oil will damage your engine.

quote:

Sorry but I am geting Tired of people giving big time bad addvise.
I FEEL I should be able to fly so I am off to find a very tall building to jump off of. I'll go with my FEELINGS and see what happens. Can not hurt if I am wrong right!!!
I'm sure some on this site would not miss me, because I know I piss people off with some of my posts.
Have A Great Day

What you feel may be bad advice might not actually be bad advice at all. Running synhtetic oil is a PROVEN winner in anyone's book. Longer life, less wear, better mileage, more power, less wear at startup, and I could go on and on about the benefits of using synthetic oil. If you choose to ignore this fact, then you are an idiot. Just because you are a by the book guy with your lubricants doesn't mean it's the best thing to do. Oh, and I'll try real hard to have a nice day too.

Sport, if you noticed in my reply, the words "oil pressure" were in quotes. I know all about the sending units, etc. in these trucks. Thanks anyway. SamC
To get back to the topic of oil analysis, no you don't have to do that procedure with your gas motor. That is used more by the folks with diesels in various sized fleets to tell when to change the oil. Saves money and time, etc. My point was that a Ford rep may ask that an oil analysis be conducted if there is suspicion that an oil other than what is "recommended" was used in the motor. And on that point alone the rep could possibly deny warranty coverage. You said you're a by the book guy, so no worries there. And also, the only time oil analysis comes into play with fleet managers who use it, is AFTER the warranty has expired. The change schedule is adhered to so that warranty coverage is maintained.
Sorry, I didn't mean to muddle the waters with the analysis stuff.
Thanks for all of the info everyone. My next oil change is coming up in about 1,000 miles so I was just trying to decide what I wanted to put in it. 5W-30 Mobil 1 Synthetic sounds like the right oil for me. I'll give it a shot and see what happens.
Thanks.
