I have never noticed any unusual noise as the flutter until I put a Banks Stinger system on my truck. At about 2000-2300, it now has a noise that I thought was a exhaust pipe rattle. I think it is actually a resonating noise in the exhaust. Probably always had it but never heard it until new exhaust installed. Is this the dreaded "flutter"?
V10T, how many miles did you have before you put the stinger on? Did you have your radio cranked up most of the time, which may have prevented you from hearing the noise before? I'm not sure if ALL V10's have the flutter but I've got to believe they do. There is no reason why some have it and others don't. I'm sure you must have flutter if you're driving a late 1999. Some early 99's have piston slap which is a whole different issue, resolved by engine replacement. I hope we can work together to get this thing figured out! Good Luck!

Hello Knocker, my truck is an early 99. Ordered in Feb 98, built mar 98, and delivered in may 98. I have never heard any piston slap in mine, nor heard any flutter, until installed the banks system. Probably because that opened up the exhaust more.
Sounds logical, if you installed a catback, which is basically what the stinger kit is, and left the stock "rams horn" pipes that come off the manifold. What is really freaking me out (and I don't freak out very often) is the fact that you didn't hear it before. Flutter is not hard to hear, even with the radio and the A/C on.
I'm trying to determine if all V10s have flutter or not. If its the exhaust system
we should all have it!!! The exhaust is the same on all the 99s and 00s. I don't know about the 01s, but I hear they've got flutter. What the hell is going on?

No!! All V10s do not have the "flutter". I test drove another V10 Crew Cab Dually about one week before buying mine, and a friend of mine and I both agree that the one I test drove did not have that noise at all. I got on it pretty hard when I was test driving it, too, and I heard nothing out of the ordinary. Mine has had the noise since day one. When I drove the truck off the lot, I attributed it to engine ping because the dealer told me he filled the truck with 87 octane. Little did I know....
I think the solution is a less restrictive cat, or maybe high quality headers (like Borla or JBA) with a custom-made, straighter Y-Pipe. I heard that JBA may be offering a replacement Y-Pipe soon, I just hope it doesn't have the same funky shape as the stock one.
I'll keep everyone posted on everything I try. Collectively, we should be able to come up with a solution way quicker than Ford's engineering team.

Bone stock so far....
Yes, I do remember the service bulletin referring to the CA emissions, but why does my truck have that option? I bought it in Iowa, and I live in New Jersey. Another one or two I looked at in New Jersey said California emissions on the sticker as well.
Does anyone know what is different about between the CA emissions and the others?
I will try and take a ride over to the dealer for the non-fluttering V10 I drove last month, to see if it is still there and if it has that option.

summitx: Yeah, I bought my truck last December and noticed the flutter on the test drive. You should've heard me drilling the salesman during that actual test drive. About a week after I bought the truck, a buddy of mine that works for another dealer brought home the entire list of SSM's that were listed at that point in time and the fluter message was one of them.
I'll see if I can get him to print me out the latest. That way we should be able to get an exact date that the message was rec'd by that specific dealer.
pcasciola: I'm pretty sure that Ca. has the strictest emissions standards in the country. It's safe to assume that if a vehicle is designed to meet CARB & Ca EPA requirements, that it will be more than accepted by any of the other states ARB's. I guess they are using us as an example and we are now setting the emissions pace for the rest of the country.
I recently read an article where they are now going to start requiring emissions for commercial and diesel powered vehicles here in Ca. A Turbo diesel with a catalytic convertor........that outta be interesting.
Take care fellas. If I get the latest SSM listings, I'll do what I can to post them. I don't have a scanner but I'm sure we can arrange something. Talk to ya later.
How the hell are we gonna get this thing figgered out? My dealer told me that ALL
new vehicles sold in the U.S. have california emissions rated systems. What is different
on the supposed non-ca trucks?!
This topic is getting hot. lets keep on top of it!

Since this has drifted into an emissions-related topic, has anyone with a Y2K noticed the lack of an EGR tube coming from the exhaust manifolds? All the pics of a v-10 that I can find (mostly from Ford) show a tube from the left manifold. Mine (and at least one other) doesn't have such a tube.
The CA emissions pkg is listed at Carpoint as Mfr Code 422 and there is a high-altitude pkg listed as Mfr Code 428. I don't think all new trucks come with these pkgs.
I can't seem to find the original printout of the TSB I had on the flutter but, if I remember correctly it was specific to trucks with California emissions equipt. In fact, The heading for the TSB read like this: "California Emissions exhaust fluttersome"
Then it proceeded to state that the flutter was a result of the placement of the catalytic convertor in the exhaust system. The location of the convertor creates a standing wave in the exhaust Y-pipe and that there was no need for alarm whatsoever. It said that dealers are not to replace engines or exhaust systems as it would not produce results but that " engineering is aware of the problem and a fix is forthcoming".
Don't know if the Ca. emissions equipped trucks have a different exhaust on them but just wanted to remind you guys.
Ricky
p.s. You don't necessarily have to live in Ca. to have a truck with Ca. emissions.
N2BOOST - Your post with the SSM text is still on the "Detonation..." thread on page 1. Here it is, cut and pasted :
#13519
6.8L- CALIFORNIA EXHAUST FLUTTERSOME 2000 SUPER DUTY F-SERIES AND EXCURSIONS EQ
ENGINE AND CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS MAY EXHIBIT AN EXHAUST "FLUTTER" NOISE. THIS NOISE MAY ALSO BE DESCRIBED AS AN ENGINE MISS OR EXHAUST LEAK AND MAY BE MISDIAGNOSED AS BEING CAUSED BY A SINGLE ENGINE CYLINDER. THIS NOISE IS CAUSED BY THE LOCATION OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WHICH CAUSES A STANDING WAVE IN THE EXHAUST Y-PIPE. THIS NOISE DOES NOT CAUSE ANY DRIVEABILITY OR DURABILITY ISSUES. THE REPLACEMENT OF EXHAUST PARTS OR ENGINE ASSEMBLIES WILL NOT RESOLVE THIS ISSUE AND IS NOT RECOMMENDED. ENGINEERING IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND A SERVICE PROCEDURE IS FORTHCOMING.
By the way, I emailed you a few months ago and asked you when you first saw the SSM - I think you said someone gave it to you in DEC of 99 - Is that correct? If so, we're approaching 10 months on the "Forthcoming Service Procedure"

In regards to the Cal. Em. the only differance is the setting in the computer. there is no physical differance according to our local dealer. I am getting our dealer and ford to buy and install Borla headers and Y pipe. They should be here next week.
I will let every body know if it fixes the flutter.

Lovn' everything but the payment!
Mine HAS the EGR Tube on the driver side! Is that the difference between CA and non CA emissions????? Guys, maybe we're getting somewhere here! Is flutter caused by:
** Location of the cat
** The EGR tube
** The computer
?????????????????????????????????????????????
