Mountain towing report
Went to Salida, Colorado from Wichita over the weekend. I pulled a 6000 lb trailer behind my 2001 V10 CC 4x4...this time with the Banks air intake and the Diablo chip. Some observations on the aftermarket performance additions...
The Banks air intake definately helped the engine to breath easier. This is purely subjective to my "before and after" trips, but the Banks kit seemed to allow for easier acceleration and quicker throttle response at all altitudes.
The Diablo chip did allow better engine performance, especially the shift points, while towing. The advertised extra power was evident in the fewer times the tranny wanted to downshift, but not until cruising at 70-75 mph (in OD). Climbing hills was different however as the rpms did not get nearly as high as the pre-Diablo towing when downshifting into 2nd gear. The previous trip the engine ran up to 5000 rpms. This trip the rpms stayed around 3500-4000.
The truck towed superbly for the majority of the trip when 3rd gear. The 3.73 is still to inadequate for mountain towing as the truck preferred 2nd gear for the long hills.
Mileage for the trip was 11.5 average towing to Colorado and 12.5 average headed home (downhill). For a 200 mile roundtrip to some great fishing spots without the trailer I averaged 15 mpg.
Hope this helps.
Dan
