need some help, dad is looking at a 2000 V10 F250

Good morning to everyone,
My dad is looking at a 2000 F250 2wd exteded cab with the V10 automatic. He's looking to replace his 1/2 ton dodge 2wd with a 360v8 that he pulls a small 5th with. He's looking for more power towing the camper and more stabilty too.
He's currently getting 14mpg empty and 9mpg pulling the camper with the dodge. Will the Ford V10 get similar mileage? the camper is a 24' with no slides so it's pretty light.
Also, the truck has 125K miles on it. What should he have the dealer check over to be sure the truck will be reliable? I've heard of the spark plug thing but what else should he look at.
BTW, the truck is real clean and the dealer is asking $7000 for it.

thanks

We pulled my buddie's 24' trailer back from Colorado to Dallas, going about 80mph and still got 8mpg. If you were a little more judicious with the throttle you would probably do better.

My '99 V-10 had a manual, so I don't know about the automatic. My '99 also had the trailer pkg and the camper pkg (helper springs and rear sway bar) and that makes a HUGE difference. My new '09 doesn't have either and I can tell ... ought to be standard on an F-250 S/D.

It's a good motor, not as good as the 3-valve V-10, though.

it all depends on how much you can afford on gas. i had a 99 v-10. if i was taking it on a long trip i would damn near have to find all the gas stations ahead of time so i knew were they were. no matter what i did i could never get better than 10mpg that was the best i ever got. and when sumthin went wrong with the motor it wasent cheap. after the tranny went i replaced it then traded it in on a 97 f250 . after all the hassel and $$$ spent on that v-10 i would never own one again...

Well dad decided not to buy the truck. But I did buy it.

I talked to the guy who traded it in. He had left reciepts in the glove box for all the work he'd just had done to the truck. New tires, ball joints, brakes front and back. He said he had it serviced at the local ford dealer every 3500 miles.

It does have a pretty good dent in the tailgate from where he backed into some equipment so I'll have to find a replacement sometime in the future.

the truck runs and drives great. I've always had 4x4 trucks before. This 2x4 sure does ride nice.

Things I will want to fix:
New tailgate
new front bumper (it's dented too)
tint the windows
