Being a diesel page nobody here is gonna say anything good about the V-10. Even though you posted in the gas section the diesel people will still come over here and tear your question to shreds...maybe?
The V-10 serves my purpose just fine. I tow nothing and get about 12-14 mpg combined driving. Really enjoy it!

Geez, I thought Truckin4 would be more positive.. hehe. I don't have any first hand info on the V10, but I've not seen any threads where the V10 is getting tagged as bad. The only issue I've heard of is the cold start 'Piston Slap' problem on 1 out of 1000 engines.
You'll know if the engine has this symptom if it knocks loudly only on initial startup on cold days.
If the engine is diaged with this condition, they, (FoMoCo) are replacing these engines with re-manufactured and new ones.
You also might want to search www.edmunds.com forums for E250 or E350 threads.(Econoline 250 and 350's) which is probably the chassis that the motorhome was built on.
I have a PSD in a 250 and my Uncle has a 99 350 with the V 10. I had been around one till I drove his. The truck runs good but its not what I was expecting it to be. It is nothing like the old 460's. The trucks pulls good, but nothing like a Stroke!!. I guess it would all depend on what he is going to be doing with it. Oh, and another thing is that the gas milage is really bad. About 8 around town and we got 10 on the interstate on a 400 mile trip with it last week. Just my 2 cents worth

As an owner of a V-10, with 18,000 on it, I have had no problems.
I doubt that my particulars and milage numbers are going to help with a V-10 in a Motorhome chassis.
I had a 460 that I sold to buy the V-10. There is a difference in power and in milage.
Both are better with the V-10. Not as dramatic as say, as the difference between a PSD and the 460.
I don't think I would have a second thought about using one in a motorhome.
Ford used them in Vans before putting them in SD's, so there are a few years of a track record behind them.
I appreciate your replies. With what I've found out her and other place on the web, and what he's found out, I think he's gonna get the camper. Once again, thanks... longhair

Fast46triton: I have been shopping motorhomes with V10's, any idea how to tell the 310 hp from the 275 hp, since motorhome builders stockpile chassis . Many thanks!
A lot of people are kinda down on the V-10 in recent issues of Trailer Life magazine. Their main complaints are a lack of power on hills and passing and poor mileage. Most motor homes with the v10 come with 4.88 gears so i can see the mileage problem. It may just be that the guys are used to 460s and 454s with alot of low RPM grunt and aren't keeping the v10 high enough in the power range. Best advice is to find some reputable magazines and research it more. Your buddy could even rent a couple of motorhomes on the weekends and get a feel for them (a v10 and a 454 perhaps). A mororhome is a big investment and if you get something your not happy with you'll feel like you just shot yourself in the foot. Do your homework, and then decide only if your positive it is the right vehicle. (If he has a full-size truck he may want to look into travel trailers, they're cheaper, easier to maintain, and its nice to have a vehicle while your camping as opposed to moving the whole motor home or buying a little car. A lot of people will tell you unless you're going camping at least once a month you're better off with a trailer.)

I seem to remember back in late 98 and 99, the V10's in vans and motorhomes were rated at 265hp and 405 tq. I don't know if any of the 2000's got the 310hp engine. I assume they did.

Well, he got trhe motorhome. He hasn't rally had a chance to drive it anywhere yet except home from the dealer, which is about 150 miles away. He did say it had a mighty big gas tank, and that it seemed to run good. I reckon we'll find out when he takes a trip to the Ozarks how it does on the hills. I want to thank everyone for their replies...
Eric, he traded in a 36' 5th wheel and 97 F350 w/ PSD. Both of them together was just too much monthly money. I think he said he saved $450-$500 a month this way.
