So, it wasn't piston slap after all... That's both & news.
Since you have a new (FQR?) motor, see if they'll pony-up the $90 Y-pipe. If not, and it's that bothersome, you can buy it yourself or go with an aftermarket system.
Personally, the flutter is annoying me. But, I don't like the looks of the "flutter-less" Y-pipe. I'm saving my pennies for an aftermarket system.
My motor is not an FQR. Its a brand dang new one that came with all the necessary components. The only things they had to change were the oil pan and valve covers as the one they received was for an econoline instead of an SD. They motor runs great, as did the other one. Still, flutter. We are having a drive around meeting next week with the dealerships GM, mechanic and a ford rep.
Finally I'm getting some attention. The dealer did admit though, that most internet users who have been following (or living) the "flutter" saga know more about it than the mechanics themselves. Scary, huh?! Maybe they should get the mechanics a computer!

Yikes! That flutter thing is wierd. Nothing seems to totally fix it. Even that choked-off-ckicken pipe doesn't totally eliminate it. (So I've read) I've gotten pretty good at "driving around" the noise. Accelerating past it, keeping below it, staying above it, etc. Looks like it's a noise that is simply here to stay. Maybe when enough carbon and junk build up in the exhaust, it will diminish it some...
Good luck, Knocker, with your next visit with the reps and stuff. Maybe they'll discover something really simple to fix it ..who knows...
SupeDave, I can't drive around my flutter.
Its always there. If I knew FOR ABSOLUTELY SURE that headers would fix it I'd bolt some on. Maybe my dealer will?! I don't think there's any other solution. The problem is that no one who has definitely had flutter has fixed it with headers (THAT I'VE HEARD OF).
I love the truck, hate the flutter!

I'm in the same position, Knocker. Flutter occurs at all rpms- some worse than others. The engine runs strong and seems to be getting stronger as it gets more miles on it. Economy seems to be getting better and the exhaust pipe is the "cleanest" I've ever had on a new truck. It's not right, but I accept the noise vs. choking off the exhaust with the "fixed" Y-pipe.
Hopefully, this Spring I'll be able to get the Banks PowerPack. When/if I do, I'll most definitely post the results.
