New whine at high RPMs when towing

Hi all, I just pulled my 2800 lb truck camper and two ATVs up to 7000ft in the hot Arizona sun. And I noticed a very worrysome whine after a few minutes at 3000+ RPMs. It goes away after a downshift. Any idea what that could mean? I've done this a few times, now and just now heard this loud whine.
Thanks for your input,
Don

Re: New whine at high RPMs when towing

It could be your belt slipping. Mine did that at 3000+ rpms.

Re: New whine at high RPMs when towing

Thanks, V10, how can I tell if it's the belt? Did yours always whine over 3000 rpm, or did it do it after several seconds at that speed?

Re: New whine at high RPMs when towing

If I remember right, it did it all the time when in the higher rpms. Soon as it shifted it quit. At first I thought it was the tranny going bye bye. Hot enough for you?

Does it originate in the passenger seat area?
I noticed my whine went away when I took my foot off the accelerator and said 'yes, dear'.

Re: New whine at high RPMs when towing

Hey SDAZ, I notice you're here in AZ, too. It sounds like there may be a real link between heat and that whine/whir noise. Did yours start after sitting at 3000+ RPM for several seconds? I sure hope this is not a tranny thing! I tried to duplicate it by simply racing the engine in park for several seconds, but it didn't happen. If it were a belt, wouldn't that happen?!

Re: New whine at high RPMs when towing

I was pulling my trailer up to Prescott and had the engine around 3500-4000 when I got a buzzing sound(almost like an alarm?).When I backed off the gas it would go away until I put a load on the engine again. It only did it when I was putting a strain on the motor.I don't really think it was the belt.I looked under the hood and everything looks okay?Bueller?thanks,Mark
