I've searched the forums, but haven't found a good explanation of the V-10 "flutter". I understand it may have something to do with the exhaust and a standing wave.
My new 250 w/v10 has a terrible "clatter" like spark-knock under load. I drove another that sounded a little better, but still had some noise. Is this just the V-10 or I am a "flutterer"? This is my first SD and I must say that there are some things I've got to get used to. This site is great and I appreciate any information or advice you may have.
I think it's flutter.. do you get it like
when accelerating uphill when the tranny's
in 4th? It sounds like knock but I don't
think it actually is..
because for me, I can actually get 1 solid
knock in a certain circumstance that you may
be able to repeat to hear the difference:
Simply, with windows down in a quiet area,
from a dead stop, mash the gas pedal to the
floor (i.e. go wide open throttle as fast as
you can--recommended only if you've broken
in the truck already). This is when I hear
a real v10 knock.
I've been told by others (also have heard it
on other cars) like Mr Troyer the SuperChips
distributor, that it's ok, that is, as long
as it's just that instance.
Hi NoMo. It's disappointing to hear that even the new trucks are still having that flutter. Mine's a 99 and it flutters under slight load around 2000 rpm every time. The flutter will stay there too if I stay at 2000 rpm. Especially going up a grade. Around town, if I accelerate moderately, I can zip past 2000 fast enough each time to not get the flutter. If I accelerate too lightly, I'll get slight flutter. I'm learning how to drive "around" the flutter. I think the only way to "fix" it is to get after-market/performance exhaust and headers.
There's somebody that goes by "Wawii" (I think?) who did just that and reports that the flutter is gone! Do some searches on exhaust and his posts will probably show up.
The more I listen, the more it sounds like exhaust noise. I looked at the Y-pipe and all I can say is what a mess. I wonder if the design is integral to obtaining the HP/torque numbers. Otherwise, seems like an easy fix would be to re-design the system. Heck, they could save some $$ by not having to make all those bends!
Other than the "noise", I really like the V10. It has a smoother, more quiet idle than the F150 w/5.4L I used to have. First tank of fuel got 9.7 MPG with most of the driving around town. Not too bad considering the age, weight, and options.
You've obviously got V10 flutter. Everyone describes the sound a little differently but its all the same noise! Ford is ignoring it or acting as if it is a phenomena that happens in a very few trucks but "HAS NO ISSUES RELATED TO THE LONGEVITY OF THE ENGINE." If I knew for an absolute fact that it is the exhaust configuration I'd put the headers on. Hopefully someone who definitely has the flutter will do the headers so we can see for sure. I think its a bunch of horse**** that Ford won't help us.
Good luck!

I posted the following message under the topic "Noise from Engine" and wonder if it may be this flutter problem? My 00 F-250 CC, V10, 4X4 is making kinda woshing noise from the engine area upon
accleration or heavy load. It's intermitent and seems to happen mostly in the morning. The
dealer has looked at it a couple of times but hasn't been able to explain it.
I've noticed that it seems to happen most of the time around 2000 rpm.
Knocker-
I suspected as much. It really does sound like its coming from the exhaust... right under the right front floorboard. More than a coincindence that the Y-pipe is there??
I read about the "standing wave", but that would be too easy to fix. Is there another explanation for the noise?
Jantzmr-
I can't speak for the others, but my noise is always present regardless of temperature or speed. It seems to be RPM related. At about 70mph, the entire truck kind of "growls". Run it up so that the RPMs are greater than 3000, and everything gets quiet again.
The sound you are experiencing is probably just your wastegate letting out excess pressure. Nothing to worry about

Sounds like you might need a set of plug wires. That is the typical indicator I get on my Mustang when it needs new wires. Once replaced everything is fine again. Might want to look into it. Wires and plugs really do not last 100K miles as claimed, not the way I drive anyway.
Good luck, Greg

Opps, Guess I have had my head under to many Cobra hoods lately. I thought it had coil pack and wires just like the Cobra's. Guess I need to look at mine before posting next time. Dang, those V8's and V10's look to much a like.
