Noise from tranny on cold start?

Lately I have been getting a noise coming from the tranny area after the truck sits all night. It's temperature
related, because when the truck is warm it never happens. The noise sounds like fluid throttled at high pressure,
like when a discharge valve on a pump is barely cracked when it's running. This sound lasts for about a minute,
becomes intermittent then quits. Happens every morning I start it up before work. I am going to take it in but
would like to hear if anyone else is experiencing this problem. Could this be a Torque converter problem??
Anyone? Anyone?

Re: Noise from tranny on cold start?

Cosmo,

When my tranny started to fail, it was warm, sunny and 250 miles from home. It made a very high pitched whistling sound which we now know was a metal part being ground to dust. And it became intermittent after about 30 minutes. Same as yours?, nope, but I'd definitely force the dealer to take action. Unfortunately, these trannys seem to have a higher than average failure rate which "in my opinion" is due to substandard parts. Still love my truck though!

Re: Noise from tranny on cold start?

This morning after I started my Excursion V10 with 4R100 and pulled it out of the garage, the 'off' light on the shift lever started blinking on and off. I know this is not a good thing! The last couple of weeks, I noticed that it didn't shift into OD as readily as it should have, and suspected that something wasn't right. No noise or slipping noted. I checked the fluid, and it's not burned, and is on the full mark. I've got 28k on it, and am probably due to have it changed, but I don't think it's overdue.

I had a 46RE go bad on a '97 Dodge Ram with 18k on it. I don't think I'm hard on my trannys. This is starting to give me a complex!
