Oil change capacity of v10

How many quarts of oil does a V10 take?

Thanks

Re: Oil change capacity of v10

Pretty sure it is 6 on the button with the filter. Nice to get two complete changes from a case of oil with no half-empty bottles left over.

Re: Oil change capacity of v10

I put in 6 quarts with a new Motorcraft filter and the level was halfway between "full" and "add" on the dipstick. Instead of adding the last 1/2 quart, I thought I'd wait and add the full quart when it needs it. Have 3000 miles on oil change now and it is still 1/8" above "add" on dipstick. I've probably wiped more oil off the dipstick checking it than the engine has consumed.

Re: Oil change capacity of v10

I would not worry about what the dipstick say's. Ford is notorious for not calibrating their dipsticks right. You are overfilling the crankcase when you add more than the recommended amount of oil. This creates excess crank windage, and foaming of the oil from getting whipped around which can damage your engine. I HIGHLY recommend using the manufacturers suggested amount.

Re: Oil change capacity of v10

There IS a little leeway in the crankcase before the oil level gets as high as You crankshaft and causes damage. Once the engine starts running I'd be more concerned with the fact the oil pan is almost empty, exp. at HIGH RPM. Doesn't give the oil much time to cool off when it returns from the upper areas of the engine to the pan before It has to get pumped right back up into the engine again.
Think of it this way, Set a clear container of motor oil somewhere where it can be seen and drive around. The oil in the pan is sloshing around like that too. Suppose it hits the crankshaft too?

Re: Oil change capacity of v10

Owner's manual calls for 6 quarts, so that's what I put. That puts the oil level at about halfway between the add line and the full line. Any more than that and you're just wasting money and oil because it's not necessary (not to mention the possible damage that others mentioned above).

Re: Oil change capacity of v10

Use six. The local Ford dealer uses 7 on changes . I do my own changes, so six it is.

Re: Oil change capacity of v10

Hello. I went thru this with my 99. Asked here and everywhere I could think of. Even called FoMoCo. SIX quarts. That will be about middle of crosshatch area of dipstick. Its also what the owners manual says for mine. DON'T overfill, better to be a little low. Stick with six.
