oil in coolant?

I have an new 2001 SD with the 5.4L auto. Its got about 600 miles on it. I noticed a layer of motor oil about 1/8 inch thick has formed in the coolant recovery tank. No collant in the oil or any other signs of trouble.
Has anyone else seen this on their trucks?

Re: oil in coolant?

There was a post in one of the '99+ PSD areas about a guy who found a used SD with oil in the coolant. Several replies about possible causes/concerns.

If I were you, I'd take it to a service center ASAP.

Re: oil in coolant?

I am not sure that you are going to want to hear this but I believe you have a blown head gasket. Instead of coolant mixing with the oil, you have oil in the coolant. Both items suggest the head gasket. Did the truck over heat at any time since you bought it??
Take it to the dealer right away. Hopefully I am wrong but better to be safe than sorry.
Good luck!
Tim

Re: oil in coolant?

Well it was just residue from the manufacturing protectant process. Tech said I was not the first to notice this. They are going to flush out the coolant at the first oil change. Didn't think there was a "real" problem. What a relief.
