Oil & filter for a 5.4L

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good motor oil for the gas engines? What about oil filters? Does anyone use the Magnefine filter advertised on this site?

Re: Oil & filter for a 5.4L

Unfortunately, this is kind of a "what's your favorite color" issue. Everyone has a favorite oil- be it synthetic or petroleum based. Use whatever you want and change it regularly.

Personally, I run Mobil 1 synthetic oil and use the Ford filter. Still do changes every 3k miles. It may be wasteful, but it's my truck and my money.

I've not used the Magnefine products, but their "strong" magnet works only within a 5mm range!?! I stuck a magnet from an old hard-disk on my tranny pan and one on the engine oil filter. I'll guarantee that my "disk" magnets will draw particles from more than 5mm away.

Re: Oil & filter for a 5.4L

I agree use what you like just make sure the filter has the anti drain back valve or whatever it is called to hold oil in the filter when engine is not running i use a purolator on my expy with the 5.4 and have not heard any piston slap yet (60,000) but i think i will go to ford and buy the motorcraft filters just to be sure from now on also use valvoline oil

Re: Oil & filter for a 5.4L

I also use Mobil 1 5W-30 and the Motorcraft filter in/on my 5.4L.

I installed a Magnefine filter in the return line from the oil-to-air cooler; I think it contains both a paper filter element as well as the magnet.

It's supposed to last for 30K miles, so it should be good for a few more weeks . In an admittedly warped kind of way, I'm looking forward to cracking it open when I do change it .

Re: Oil & filter for a 5.4L

If you use the Ford Motorcraft filter see if your local walmart or autoparts store stocks them. Should be cheaper then ffrom a ford dealer for the same filter. I have gotten a motorcraft filter for my truck at AutoZone for $2.99. It is $5.xx at the Ford Dealer. Just a suggestion.

Re: Oil & filter for a 5.4L

I read some oil filter tests on all major brands 2 months ago (should have saved the link) and they liked the Purolator and one other (can't remember the other). I just changed my oil @ 1500 miles and put a Purolator in (V10). I was getting "valve train noise for 1-2 seconds at cold startup with the original factory filter, and since the Purolator went in, no problems with the noise whatsoever. It makes me think that the original had a faulty drain back valve. Just my 2 cents worth...

Re: Oil & filter for a 5.4L

Good point sbrem. I should have really stated that I use Motorcraft filters. Buy them and the oil at Wal-Mart. Be watchful of special "value-size" containers of oil. They are normally 5-quart jugs, but only cost as much as three 1-qt. bottles.
