Oil Filters Tightening In Service

Hey Guys

Looking for some opinions on this one. Removal of the factory oil filter on my new F150 was an exercise from hell. Dam thing would not come off. Broke my filter wrench and ended up using too small a set of channel locks to finally get the stupid thing out...

So I posted my frustrating experience on another site and got some comments about how spin on filters tighten as the miles increase. This was something I've not heard.

What do you all think?

Merry Christmas, hope all enjoyed a great day!

I'd have trouble believing that. I think we just put them on too tight. First, lube the seal well, then spin the filter on until you can't rattle the filter on it's threads, then just turn it 3/4 to 1 turn. That's all it needs or over time with heat cycles when the lube dries up that oring becomes a tough lock washer to overcome at the next oil change.

Re: Oil Filters Tightening In Service

Oil filters DO tighten from heat cycles over time.I couldn't believe how hard it was to remove my oil filter last change and I did the one before and know better than to tighten it on too much. And I don't use an impact wrench on the drain plug either!

Re: Oil Filters Tightening In Service

I wonder if the construction of a filter, the way the internal metal parts are formed and relate to each other, would allow movement or deformation due to either heat or pressure causing the relationship between the sealing surface and the threaded feature to lengthen, effectively adding load to the gasket surface? I can't believe that it actually spins tighter.

Maybe you could try antisieze on the gasket next time and see if it stays lubed better at oil change time.

Re: Oil Filters Tightening In Service

They do not spin on tighter, the heat cycling is what causes it to come off harder.

And oil is all you should put on the o-ring, that is what is specified.

Re: Oil Filters Tightening In Service

But what about heat cycling is doing this? I know that most any threaded component on aircraft is safety wired to prevent loosening. These parts are also heat cycled, bigger temperature delta too. What am i missing here?

And, thanks guys for what you've offered so far. Really appreciate it!

Re: Oil Filters Tightening In Service

I changed my oil at 300 miles on the truck in my signature. I do this on every new engine I own. The filter was a bear to come off. I think a robot must spin them on with a dry gasket. Ever since every 3000 miles , the MC filters come off just fine. I do use a set of filter pliers for removal only. To put them on, I can get the 3/4 turn, after gasket contact, using my two hands but I pull wrenches for a living. A keyboard jocky might need a strap wrench.
