oil pumps

I am very close to buying a F350 srw with the 6.8L. I was told by a local (but well trained) mechanic that the 5.4 L and the V10 have an oil pump which functions like the auto tranny pumps and is actually located up in the engine block as opposed to down in the pan. The dealers are clueless. Anybody know the real skinny on this?

Re: oil pumps

He is correct. The oil pump on both engines is mounted behind the timing chain cover and driven off the nose of the crankshaft

Re: oil pumps

Doesn't this complicate the living heck out of changing an oil pump and add greatly to the expense?

Re: oil pumps

It is VERY RARE to have to change an oil pump without having to dig deeper in the engine anyhow. I don't see it as a problem at all.

Re: oil pumps

professor is 100 percent correct. the days of changing an oil pump to give a little life to an old worn out engine are over. Besides, a properly maintained modular will FAR outlast the old pushrod engines.
