Opinions on K&N intake kit for 5.4L

I just bought a new 5.4L F250 and I was wondering if the intake kit is worth the $$$? Any opinions?

Re: Opinions on K&N intake kit for 5.4L

Looks like I have pretty much the same truck as you... I bought it for mine because everybody recommended it, well I have to say I'm not real sure it was worth the money. The one thing I really didn't like is how you have to take the stock Mass Air Sensor off and add it in to the K&N intake... it just doesn't all line up real well. I didn't notice any difference in power or gas mileage either. I’m not trying to talk you out of it I just wanted to tell you what I thought. I added the SMCT about 2 tanks of gas later and I love it! Not a great power increase but it sure makes the tranny shift quicker. How do you like the Flowmaster?

Re: Opinions on K&N intake kit for 5.4L

Last I knew the K&N didn't come with any type of heat shield from the motor. The airaid does, but the airiad kit re-uses the stock tubing, so the K&N has a better and cleaner look. I would just be more comfortable with some kind of enclosure around the filter to block heat from the motor.

Re: Opinions on K&N intake kit for 5.4L

Thanks for the opinions. I think I'll wait until I have a little extra money to burn and get the kit later since it doesn't seem to make a huge improvement.

The Flowmaster I had installed was the two chamber style and I am so glad I put it on. I did notice a small increase in power, but the main improvement was the sound. My truck was so quiet from the factory and it just didn't feel right with a truck that big. It sounded good for the first few days after the installation, and after a little bit of build up inside, it sounds perfect. It has a real deep sound at the low RPMs and you can't even tell it is there when you're cruising on the freeway, which is exactly how I like it.

The muffler shop also raised the tailpipe up a few inches since it hangs down so low from the factory and installed a chrome tip. I would highly recommend this mod

Re: Opinions on K&N intake kit for 5.4L

They only seemed to affect the shifts and my SMCT fixed that, now I have a Wide Open Throttle shift that is much firmer.
