Re: Overdrive tranny in a 460

I had an '95 dually with 85,000 on the clock towing 6500lb horse trailer blew the trans to the tune of $2900.
New 250 I use OD on the flats but when the trans starts hunting I turn it off better the extra gas use $ than smokin another trans. My vote goes to towing OUT of overdrive

Re: Overdrive tranny in a 460

Gabby, I sold my 95 F-250 with a 460 and auto trans last year. I had 60,000 on it when sold. I towed may 11,000 5th wheel with a 1,500 boat behind the 5er. I always towed in od. Never any trans problems. I had no upgrades on the tranny.

Re: Overdrive tranny in a 460

If it is not sifting in and out of od I would use od on the flat ground. The 460 that I had was a 88 model with the 5 speed 4x4 and I have towed as much as 38,000 pounds in od and didn't have any trouble keeping speed just run it up to 65 shifted into od and was GONE!. Wasn't to terribley fast took a mile to get to speed but it would still keep climbing. I took it to 80 to see and chickened out, that is very very very heavy. But anyway under 10k I would think that od would be ok, just like they said, if it shifts in and out of od take it out. Hope this helps, Mason

Overdrive tranny in a 460

I have a buddy with an 97 F-250 with a 460 auto trans with overdrive. We just hauled a 8000lb trailer 100 miles each way and he did not use overdrive and got 6 miles to the gallon. The guy who used to own it got 10 mpg towing. Do you think it is OK to tow in overdrive? It was all highway and mostly flat. He thinks it wil ruin the transmission in overdrive. We ran a 3200 rpm most of the way.
