Pinging????

I have a V10 2001 Crew Cab F250.
When I start it In the morning or after it has sat for a while it pings when started and cont. for a min. or two. It sounds like the valves (maybe). It has 9300 miles on it and run AWESOME!
So I was wondering if you guys have the same thing and what might it be. Thanks in advance for your help. SS

Re: Pinging????

"Pinging" may be the wrong terminology. Are you using a Motorcraft oil filter? Some brands allow oil to flow through the anti-drain back valve. This prevents the oil passages from staying primed with oil.
You may have a sticking valve lifter.

Re: Pinging????

With a sticking valve lifter what would be the solution to fixing that. A trip to the dealer? any help would be great

Re: Pinging????

I've noticed the same thing with my 2001, I think it sounds like knocking and possibly some noise from the valves. I run 87 octane regularly. I figure the dealer wouldnt be able to duplicate the problem and/or say it was inherent with the motor and not to worry. I know it doesnt sound good thats for sure.

Re: Pinging????

I don't know if the V10 uses lifters since it is an OHC design, but if it does that may be the source of the clicking sound. Many new engines are "priority main" oiled: that is where the engine oil goes from the oil pump to the main bearings first and then works its way up the block to the camshaft(s).

GM switched to this style of oil system on its small block v8s in 97 with the Vortec series of motors. This lead to some complaints (one by me on behalf of my mothers (98 Tahoe), one on my own behalf (98 K1500) and onw by my brother (98 Sierra) because after start up on a warm motor there was a noticable clicking sound for a few moments. This is because the oil "bleeds" out of the lifters and they click until the oil can work its way back up to them. On cold starts this is not evident since the lifters are "bled" all the way down and are not pumping the oil out of themselves for that time before the fresh supply of oil reaches them.

So if in fact the Ford OHC "modular" motors use hydralic valve lifters (alot of OHC just use solid roller "followers") then this is a minor, harmless annoyance.
