Piston slap noise "normal"?

My V-10 makes a piston slap type noise on startup in the morning. It is quite pronounced for about 2-3 seconds, then settles down but you can still hear it for up to about 2 minutes. I am not even convinced it is piston slap - no way you should still be getting a noise from loose pistons for 2 minutes. The pistons are aluminum and the block is cast iron - so the pistons expand faster than the block. Within a couple of strokes they are up to operating temp. But nevermind, let's just assume it is indeed piston slap. Is anybody else getting this? The dealer is telling me it is even more prevelant on the 5.4L V8. So I am just trying to figure if I should make a complete stink over this or if it really is a trait of this engine. How many other gassers are doing this?

Re: Piston slap noise "normal"?

It is indeed quite prevalent in the 5.4L tritons, especially the pre 2001 manufacture dates. For seeeral days worth of reading, follow this link http://www.f150online.com/forums/sea...amp;sortorder= .There is a bunch of info on piston slap and a few other triton motor issues in there.Happy reading

Re: Piston slap noise "normal"?

Mine sounds like an oiler for a few seconds on startup. I just changed to a Motorcraft oil filter from the Wix I had been using, and it fills/builds pressure faster also, less noise from the valve train also. I thought they had the piston slap thing licked before 2000? Might just be the no oil noises? HTH

Re: Piston slap noise "normal"?

heres some info that nissan had on there 3300 v6.these engines had piston slap due to half of the pistons being thermal coated and the other bank was not.the fix we had was to order the pistons for the "coated"bank an install in cylinder 1,3,5.imho it would be something to worry about.dont take the thats normal answer.
