Myself and a few others that have trucks configured with the V10 and 4:30 rear end have been experiencing a fairly loud howling noise coming from the rear of the truck. You can only hear it when traveling at 65 mph and up and the engine is turning between 2,400 and 2,700 rpm pending on speed. The faster you go the louder it gets. I've noticed that when you let off the gas it goes away. It seems that the consensus between those with the problem is that it is some sort of exhaust resonance. I would like to know from those with this configuration if you experiencing this same problem? I'm trying to determine if this is something that is normal like my service manager is trying to tell me.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Question for those with the V10 and 4:30 rear end
I've got the V10 w/ 4.30LS. Since I have 35" BFG's on it, all I can hear is a slight howl from the tires. I don't recall any alarming howling when it was running on stock rubber. Are you sure it's not the engine noise your getting? If memory serves me......@ 65 the motor is buzzing pretty good. Something like 26-2700rpm.
Re: Question for those with the V10 and 4:30 rear end
This may not be it, but may be possibility..
I had a metallic-like howling noise that grew louder after a short while since it started, in which the intesity increased more throttle I gave it. Turned out to be my catalic converter.. so got that replaced and it's been good for a few thousand miles since.
Also, are you running the A/C while you're hearing this noise? (I know you say it's coming from the rear, but just a guess if that howling noise isn't as intense as the noise i was having from my cat problem)

Did the noise that you were having occur at all speeds or just from about 65 on? When did this problem start for you? I've only got 700 miles on mine so if that's the case then it is obviously faulty equipment. I'm not running the air conditioner at this time, it's a little too cold for that.

Re: Question for those with the V10 and 4:30 rear end
TB, it occurred at any speed, the more throttle, the louder it was. It started like around 6000 miles after I had my exhuast done and was also trying out Nitropropane, which I don't think I should have (that may have caused it.. because it turns "bad" when left overnight). The dealer said the cat was simply damaged, though they had no idea how.
Re: Question for those with the V10 and 4:30 rear end
Nice and quiet, have had it up to about 102mph,still quiet, but a little scary thinking about a quick manuever at that speed.Won't do that too often! These are not sports cars, that's what I have my Maxima for.
Re: Question for those with the V10 and 4:30 rear end
I haven't noticed any appreciable howling at those speeds but I will pay specific attention next time I'm on the freeway. In fact I'm quite pleased with just how quiet the truck is. What I can't stand is the tremendous resonating inside the cab while running with the crew cab windows down at speeds above say...50. It's terrible. The deep-toned pulsing makes my ears go crazy. It seems to be speed related. I can't wait to put 35's on to see if it helps change the characteristics of it.
Re: Question for those with the V10 and 4:30 rear end
I'll try to record the noise and put it up on the web.
Mine starts at about 70mph. The droan is loud enough that it can drown out the radio. I've been playing around and I can't duplicate the noise at any given RPM range driving in 1st, 2nd or with OD off. It only happens in OD and at speed. One would think that maybe it's tire noise, but, like TB said, if you ease off the throttle the resonance goes away even though you're still rolling at 70+ mph. Plus, there is a light vibration in the floorboard- especially on the passenger side.
Re: Question for those with the V10 and 4:30 rear end
Going off of the post directly above mine, I'd would tend to look toward the driveshaft. Sounds like it may be out of balance. That would cause a drone/vibration at all rpms. The supercab's and crewcab's use a two piece shaft assembly that requires that each shaft be balanced individually and then as a complete shaft assembly. I bet that's your problem. If memory serves, there were quite a few members experiencing the same problem a while back. Their dealers were remedying the problem for them under warranty. Try doing a search on "driveline or driveshaft vibration". Search the PSD forums as well. Good luck.

Re: Question for those with the V10 and 4:30 rear end
Sorry that I haven't got a sound file yet... hopefully won't be able to now. ?
Started the truck today after work and the ABS light stayed on. Drove straight to the shop and had the "advisor" see for himself that it was lit. He shut the truck off and restarted- light went out.
Left the truck for them to check out the ABS, drone/vibration @ 70mph, popping noise while making right turns, V-10 flutter and a rattling door panel.
If I get anything besides NPF / CND, I'll post it. This is probably the worst Ford I've ever owned: 2500 miles and already has a laundry-list of problems.
Re: Question for those with the V10 and 4:30 rear end
I had a 1999 F250 with 4.30LS axle and sold it to a friend with 15k miles, no noises.
I now have a 2000 F350 with 4.30LS axle, 6k miles and also currently have no noises.
I'm sorry I couldn't be of any help.

Re: Question for those with the V10 and 4:30 rear end
NoMo,
Can you describe the "drone" that you have at 70mph? At 3000 miles, my truck developed an audible rumble/slight vibration. This vibration shows up around 55-60 mph and is quite noticeable until about 75mph.
